best iTunes encoding

Alright I thought this would be a much discussed topic, but I couldn't find anything helpful.

What is the best way to import music from a CD onto iTunes to get the absolute best sound quality? I only need it to work on iTunes and my iPod, so compatibility or space isn't much of a problem.

Is it better to use Apple Lossless or the AIFF? Thanks!

Sorry, I reckon this should be in the Computer Audio forum.

Many will agree to use Apple Lossless if you are tied into the ipod ecosystem.

Do a search in the computer audio forum for EAC (Exact Audio Copy).

Import to one of the formats/codecs with no data loss, and you should be safe. Apple Lossless, WAV or AIFF that is.
Consider turning on "Use error correction when reading audio CD's" as well.

Thats it.

in the past it was simply none, but I think apple's improved the ripping capabilities of iTunes since then? (I think I remember reading they improved it, and I'd find it likely so, given how long iTunes has been around) I can't be sure though, I still avoid it and go with EAC.

It's a 2 step process though...
Proper rip (extraction of the audio) and then encoding (to lossless or lossy of your choice).

A poor extraction, even if encoded to a lossless format, is still a poor extraction.
