Wow, that is pretty harsh assessment of Mozart's work.......I definitely disagree.

Do you consider Bach's harpsicord concertos as equal or better than Mozart's 18-27 piano concertos?

If you are focused on choral, organ, exploration and refinement of baroque counterpoint/fugue keyboard work yes Bach is your man.......but Mozart is of another later era/style of music and extremely gifted composer

I am also very found of Haydn.......

Interesting that Haydn considered Mozart to be the greatest composer he had ever heard and they had great mutual admiration, his famous quote to Mozart's father in 1785 after hearing Mozart perform some quartets composed in Haydn's honor :

Agreed but I noticed several people were very definitive in thier preference for Bach.......so I was wondering why exactly they feel this way?

I agree that Haydn has composed some wonderful pieces, but not all of his music is GREAT.

Bach hands down, you can listen to piece after piece and wonder how the man could have created them all, each just amazing.

I believe bach has the greatest amount of GREAT pieces.

recordings available per composer from arkivmusic.com. they are the top three and by a lot. i think it says something about their overall popularity and the general quality of their works.

Mozart, W. A. (6,241)
Bach, Johann Sebastian (5,451)
Beethoven, Ludwig van (4,703)

as for who is my favorite, i think they are all great.

guess I'll chime in since I made the poll.....

Some of the harsh responses about Mozart are surprising. I'm surprised Bach is outdoing Beethoven here. I think all three composers are equals.......but Beethoven as Orwell has said about his animals.....is "a little more equal"

Bach, no question. The stuff he made was just insane... to think this guy could literally improvise the fugues he wrote is just absolutely unfathomable. Frankly, compared to Bach, all other composers are basically n00bs.

Mozart is a close second in my opinion. His music is a little more expressive than Bach. Where Bach relied on complex tonality, Mozart really savored the individual voice a little more, I think.

Only slightly off topic, but for those advocating Haydn over Mozart, this quiz on emusic is a small test of people's ability to actually tell them apart. Sometimes difficult in a 30 second excerpt, but I think usually quite possible. And it comes from an earlier forum thread that links to this article in Slate on how to tell the difference between the two.

Forced to choose only one for my desert island, I too would maybe pick Haydn, but it would be a very tough decision between two equal giants.

Well, I'm certainly a huge fan of Bach too but Mozart has my vote. As an opera lover, I'm always amazed by Mozart's ability to walk on the edge. He's able to reach deep into the human soul while staying, seemingly at least, "light". This tension is what I like most in him.


Beethoven ? Romantism just isn't my thing.

Voted for Beethoven because I remember watching Immortal Beloved when I was younger and got hooked on his music afterwards, though I'm listening to Bach right now
