Back in the 80s with SR60 drivers. The headphone plastic holder was made in China and Grado shipped their SR60 drivers over that were then put in these.

Least thats what a quick Google search gets me.

Yeah, the SR40 was basically the SR60 with a horrible, horrible enclosure, and considerably worse sound than the SR60. This sale is definitely for the collectors.
