Can someone recommend me some good jazz outside of the obvious classics like Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and John Coltrane? Preferably some good modern day Jazz like Bohren & der Club of Gore. Thanks.

Hmm…that's a toughie. I'll spare you the inevitable "that's not really jazz" rant; I'm sure you've heard that before. Anyway, a little bit ago there was another head-fier who started a thread looking for precisely this Bohren-type soundtrack-y music with saxophone, but he didn't get too much help.

The only band I can think of is this Philadelphia group Shot X Shot, but they're not really ambient like Bohren; there's no piano. Oh, and not too long ago, the avant saxist Daniel Carter made an atmospheric sounding disc with the drummer/electronic percussionist Federico Ughi. Hope this helps.

Sonny Sharrock - Ask the ages
It came out in 91 & still amazes me every time i play it.He was such a riveting guitar player, the band play out of their skin
The Necks - All of the albums i have just suck you in with a deceptively simple idea that just grows without changing,if that makes any sense
Most of the tunes go for at least 25 mins, brilliant

I was just thinking that you might try entering those artists in Pandora. See what music comes up in the playlist that is generated.

Jazz is hosting so many different styles nowadays that it's difficult advicing you something suiting your preferences, so here's a variety of choices in no particular order:

- The Bad Plus
- Upper Left Trio
- Medeski, Martin & Wood (Their "Live Tonic" is a great album)
- Club D'Elf
- Dave Douglas
- Rick Wald & 16/NYC
- Loren Stillman
- San Francisco Jazz Collective
- Pat Martino
- Chris Potter
- Carla Bley
- Maria Schneider Orchestra
- Tord Gustavsen Trio
- Stefano Bolani / Paolo Fresu /Enrico Rava (terrific italian musicians playing together or with their own ensembles)
- Manu Katche
- Robert Glasper

Some of the old masters like McCoy Tyner, Lee Konitz, Michael Brecker, Ornette Coleman and a few more released great albums in the last 2-3 years.
