Listen directly from CDP?

Hello,

I'm planning to buy a CDP and was wondering if there's a player with a good headphone out. I have a pair of HD-600, but no amp - yet.

Thanks boys!

The Shanling PCD-3000 has a built-in headphone amp. Drew at Moon Audio has at least one left that was used as a demo for a great price of $380 plus S&H. Google the CD player or go to Moon Audio and look at the link for clearance items.

Marantz SA8001 has an excellent headphone-out SQ.

I just received my SA8001 today, and I definitely agree that the headphone out is quite good. I prefer the sound of the Grace m902 to the sound of the headphone-out on the player, but not by much.

I was going to recommend the Marantz CD5001, it sounds great with Sennheisers, but if 'ya got the coin I'm sure the SA8001 is excellent as well, as Comfy and Silver mentioned.

Thank you for your suggestions.

The CD5001 sounds interesting if it sounds good. How would you describe its signature? Have you tried it with HD-600?

Of course, all help is welcome!

My "official" review is here. I have the HD-580s, a very close cousin to the '600s.

Beautiful review! I'm kinda convinced now.

Anyone else has something to add?

the eastern electric minimax is supposed to have a decent headphone out. not sure if it's good enough for the 600s.

I was able to listen to boomana's (Vicky) Eastern Electric MiniMax at a mini meet held by JP#'s. Very nice sounding unit, sometimes you can pick one up at Audiogon for a very good price.

I assume the OP has read this other thread's comments, regarding the headphone-out jack?

Yes, I saw that thread. Wonder if the other Marantz CDP's share the same integrated amp?

I'll have another try, no one knows if they share the same headphone amplifier?

Thanks!

On paper I think they are different, especially for the CD6002 since it is actually a little newer than the x001 players. You can find the specification on their website.

I compared the CD5001, CD6002 and SA7001. Of course they sound different and there are no way to compare their headphone section alone. But IMO, they all share the Marantz lively and bright sound signature.

All three drive my notoriously hard to drive K501 very well. The CD6002 need a tiny bit more travel on the volume knob than the other two, but plenty to drive the most power hungry headphone (may be save for the K1000). I haven't heard the SA8001, but I'd be surprised if it is very different from the SA7001.
