Cmoy OP AMP help. - Page 3

Ok,

I couldn't figure out the pot but did manage to get the i/o jacks working. I'm driving a set of Grado SR80's with the amp right now and it doesn't give any more boost to the headphones than just using the integrated amp in my iPod. I'm using the RS TL082 with two 9 volts in series so that should be enough to drive it right?

Thoughts on the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's not the right type. You have a switched single-channel pot. It's likely linear taper, too, not audio taper.

I thought the guide was quite clear that there are far better chips out there, that this one should be used only for emergency testing. It's recommended only because it's the only thing that you can likely find locally that could possibly work, not because it's any good.

Tangent, thank you for talking me down. I received the OPA2132PA in the mail today and all I can say is WOW!!!!

With the right chip this amp does nothing but rock! That TL082 is garbage.

My first time listening to an amplified iPod but simply amazing. Now I just wonder how a better amp would sound.

Looks like I better learn to read a schematic.

Thanks again Tangent!

It's actually a decent chip for audio, but it can't drive a headphone load worth beans. In other circuits, like preamps and filters, it's an okay choice. I'll bet you have at least one CD that went through a mixing board with a chip from this family in it.

Since you seem to like RS, you might see if your local store has any of the Forrest Mims books.
