Anyone else as obsessive as me?

I don't think I know a single person on this world as obsessive about taking care of their CDs as me (not personally at least). I treat my CDs like premature babies... I only recently got back into buying them and my habits haven't changed. I always put them in their correct cases when I'm not playing them, I wear cloth gloves when I skim through the booklets, and I make every effort possible to prevent scratches (though I still get minor scratches occasionally). Also, I've recently started making copies of all my CDs, to avoid having to lend the actual CDs out to friends, or take them out of the house in general (even the car). I don't have very many CDs right now (only about 30) but when my collection grows and I start to store them in the hall closet, I plan to make some kind of mechanism to save them quickly in case of a fire (knock on wood). So, anyone else out there like me?

I do the same. And I also add CD treatments/cleaners on occasion to keep scratches and fingerprints off.

Nope, not me. I rip em in lossless, back em up in a couple different places, and after that I dont care if they are used as frisbees or coasters.

^^^^ or you could save your CD's and send them to me.

I vote for backing up digitally and not going through all the handling business - just store in a safe place and dust the shelf once in a while so the other half does not make too much noise about it.

I also always make sure the CDs are put back in the case in the correct orientation. Is that too obsessive?

You are less obsessive than me. I don't lend my discs out to anyone. I also don't use my discs in the car. I make a copy at the most, but tend to listen to the radio for inspiration on other discs to buy. Scratches? I got scratch removers for that and clean any discs from friends who pass by before I put them in my CDP.

I guess what I am wondering is if you are obsessive compulsive about other areas of your life too? For instance; what is the thread count of your sheets? I have seen many photos of audio gear on this forum. I would say a fair amount of it is very clean, well taken care of, and obsessed over. What I also notice is that in these same photos, I see walls that need painting, chairs that need attention, and just a general disinterest in visual surroundings. I am not obsessed with my CD's though I take care of them. However, I just spent three weeks, stripping off paint on my 60 year old radiator and window sills in my bedroom. I then sealed them with Renaissance wax. I could now say, my bedroom looks like the Museum of Modern Art.

If there's fire, I believe there are things more important than CDs

If I could make real money doing it I would. But honestly, my bedroom is only 8' X 12'. Quite small. It literally took weeks to do this. I do not understand why window sills were ever painted. As soon as you open the windows up, dirt gets on and in the paint. It looks terrible. So I have two windows done and nine more to go. I just do not have the energy to do the rest right now. What I did do looks brilliant though.

I'm sure there are people who obsess as much or more than you. In my younger days I was maybe worse than now. I used to stay up late doing the green liner thing (passe now I suppose). I dont use gloves, but I confess to sometimes using plastic baggies to bring discs in to work. Experience has taught me not to loan my music out even to the most trusted, I have had unreplaceable stuff lost or stolen by "friends"- this going back to even the days of cassette. Got burned enough times. Nowadays I offer to burn one for people if they ask to borrow to avoid being perceived as too obsessive. If youve ever been shopping for used stuff, I'd say the world could use more people like us.

Yeah, have you ever rented a CD from a library? Jeez, it's like people take their CDs and give it to their dogs as chew toys.

I take excellent care of my discs, cases and liner notes included. Nothing too obsessive I suppose. However, I don't lend discs to anyone. My dad's the same way, probably learned it from him. It's funny though in a way. I've loaned expensive equipment before, but don't ask for my 10 dollar disc...It ain't happening buddy...
