Impressions of the Shanling PCD3000 CD Player

Thread Starter
I saw the Shanling PCD3000 at the Moon Audio booth at Can Jam '08. I like that it is black, it has a small footprint and would look nice with my Woo Audio WA6 SE headphone amp. I have not, though, been able to find many reviews/impressions of this player online. Does anyone own one and wish to comment on the quality of this CD player? If not, are there any online reviews that might be helpful to me?/

Or, perhaps, there are players <$500 I should consider instead of the Shanling unit

I've looked at the PCD3000 and there are a couple of head-fiers with them. I've heard it's a decent red book player although I recall most were using external headphone amps so couldn't comment on the built-in headphone amp. I talked with Drew at Moon and he said they are good players and I'm sure he will gladly answer any questions you have on them.

I have one and it really is a nice little unit. Built like a tank, quiet operation and even has coax S/PDIF out along with the typical analog out. I don't like, however, that the analog out is not a true line out. You can control gain via the remote and seems to tie in with the onboard headamp. I found this out the hard way when I plugged in a pair of headphones and totally blasted my eardrums. Speaking of which, I wasn't too crazy about the onboard headamp but honestly, I haven't given it much of listen so it may have come around a bit since I last used it.

Mind you, I don't have much experience with a variety of dedicated CDPs but I have no complaints with Shanling's budget offering.

Wow! I saw this thread and thought that finally someone was writing about my player (Sort of), My mistake. I have an Exemplar modified Shanling SCD3000 (The SACD version of the CD3000). Unfortunately the CD3000 sells for something like 3x the price of the mentioned PCD3000, and my Exemplar version something like 10x the price.

Still for what it's worth my player kicks ass. The Shanlings tend to be fairly well engineered and exceptional values. When properly modded the CD3000 becomes a world beater.

I'm a little confused, could you explain further? Do you mean the analog out is variable? Or fixed?? I was under the impression the analog out was cut off when a headphone was plugged in and both were controled by the same volume control, which would mean it's a variable output if I remember my outputs correctly.

Also, could you give it another listen via it's built-in headphone amp and give us some more details? I'm going to be forced to downsize soon and this is one unit that is on my 'little CDP' list.
