An 8mm thick drive will also fit, but only if you leave out the protective metal drive shield that's inside the Zune.
The 160GB drive used by Zombie_X is probably an 8mm.

True, as I forgot about the metal shield. Are you using a hard clear case now that you've removed it to install the drive?

MS will not allow Zune software to be installed on a pirated copy of Vista or XP, whereas Apple could care less.

I have sent my Zune 8GB back twice for replacement for lock up problems.

I like the FM section, but am pretty frustrated with the software and the hardware.

I mostly use my iPod.

I didn't remove the shield. My 80GB drive is only 5mm thick, not 8mm.

Even if I HAD removed the shield, I still wouldn't use a case. I'm not snowboarding or doing anything rough when using my Zunes. So they are babied, and still look brand new, even never having used a protective case (except for about 1 week with a Speck Toughskin).

That seems odd. About 4 years ago I bought a used Alienware PC from a guy on Craigslist. Came to find out that the copy of XP Pro installed on it was not legit.

I've had the Zune software installed on that same PC for about a year and a half with no issues. Maybe I just got lucky.

I think it was a Western Digital, but a friend installed it for me.

Does WD even make 1.8" drives? Why don't you ASK, if he's a friend? I live in the Milwaukee area, too. Don't make me have to hunt you down just to pull your Zune apart to check the innards, LOL...

WD doesnt make 1.8 drives. it is either Samsung or Toshiba.

Or possibly Hitachi?
Ok it was a Samsung. I asked him about it earlier today and that's what he said..

Thanks for the info! Didn't mean to strong-arm you.

Funny, because my Vista installation isn't legit and Zune works fine.

So much for that theory

Does the Zune 30 not suffer from hard drive spinning noises with sensitive IEMs like the Zune 80/120 does?
