Yes, the poll them vs. velvet underground sparked this question.

Is the beginning of their discography the place to start listening to them? I had to vote for Velvet Underground based on teh fact that I have never listened to much of the Ramones. Guess I should start now...

Yes, their first album is the best, and is THE first official recording of punk rock music ever........ Road to Ruin and Rocket to Russia are also essential
I've been talking headphones with you for years. Now I can help you with your purchase:) Sales Specialist & Headphone Guru @ Headphones.com

Just moved this from the poll thread…

The first four albums are excellent, but I especially like:
Ramones Leave Home
Road to Ruin (they cover Sonny & Cher's "Needle & Pins" and write a good ballad of their own, "Questioningly")

I really like the Ramones style of punk. I don't tend to enjoy the Punk to hardcore transition. I just heard Jet Boy, Jet Girl by Elton Motello recorded back in 1977. The music was stellar and although I wasn't fond of the lyrics in researching Jet Boy, Jet Girl, I found out about Plastic Bertrand who pretty well ripped the music from this track and rerecorded some French lyrics for the music. I really liked this version ("Ça plane pour moi") and would love to get some recommendations on other Punk groups that are in the same vein as the Ramones and Plastic Bertrand.

The Damned?

As a kid stuck in a small town high school the Ramones saved me from the ravages of silly love songs, fire and rain and mirror ball screeching. I don't listen to them as much as I used to but I'll never forget how fresh and fun they were the first time I heard Blitzkrieg Bop! Run, don't walk, to your nearest music retailer and pick up some Ramones cds, any era will do. It'll make ya grin!

"Three Chords and the Truth."

I love how every other song starts with the words:

one,two, three, four----->ROCK!

I still love those guys.

Been listening to "Rocket to Russia" and realized that Ramones sound like a punked-up Beach Boys...

Joey was also heavily influenced by the "girl group" movement of the early 60s. He recorded "Baby I Love You" on End of the Century, with Spector himself behind the board. And the last thing Joey worked on before he died was Ronnie Spector's She Talks to Rainbows. On that EP, they dueted on Joey's "Bye Bye Baby."

One her unfairly overlooked album Siren, Ronnie recorded the Ramones's "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow," and was supported by the cream of the New York punk movement, including the incendiary Cheetah Chrome on guitar.

The Ramones may have been revolutionaries, but they were also calssicists; Joey was an obsessive rock n roll fan whose tastes ran to the entire history of the music.

Rocket to Russia is my favorite Ramones album, BTW.

This is the perfect introduction to the Ramones.

The God fathers of punk, The Ramones were great. Its sad they didn't get the recognition they deserved until it was to late.

I like them quite a bit live as well. There is a live recording - Live January 7, 1978 at the Palladium NYC. Its awesome. Recommend it once you get some of their studio albums.

Score 1 for American music also.

For me, it's Ramones head and shoulders above all else, and then Too Tough to Die. The others of the first four are classics also, but TTTD adds something new and indispensable to the mix.

As a teenager growing up in the UK in the late '70s, I always thought of the Ramones as "punk for people who didn't really get it"
