Kenwood kd 48f turntable for free

A friend of ours recently gave us a working Kenwood KD 48f turntable. The deck works well coming through my vintage pioneer sx 434 receiver and newer 3-channel kenwood ls v-530 floor speakers.

Does anyone know anything about this turntable and if it is something worth equipping with a grado black cartridge?

I'm new to vinyl so i'm trying to get the best set-up possible for little cash because I am a poor college student.

I don't know anything about your Kenwood, but give it a try with the Grado Black. It could only offer an improvement and you can always move it to another deck.

For cheap improvements, find a manual and get the setup spot-on. Change the bearing oil and check the bearing for wear. If there's a flat spot on the bearing, take it to a machine shop and ask for a replacement. Shouldn't be more than $10 or so. Install a new belt, too.

Get a spirit level for a few dollars at a hardware store and make sure your table is dead level. You might want to experiment with various damping, like putting a layer of Dynamat on the underside of the table or replacing the feet with various DIY feet out there. Maybe build a wall shelf for it.

Also, learn how to wash your records in the sink. I can't post a link from the phone right now, but Google will pull up handwashing techniques. Clean discs make a huge difference.

Have fun and buy lots of used vinyl. There's nothing better.

Before going with the Grado, make sure that the motor is shielded, if it is not an Grado Prestige series cart will hum... I have a Green, great cart, but with an unshielded motor, it's not so hot.

Easy guys.

It's a low end model with a P-mount arm. Could have been sold as part of a department store "rack system." By all means, enjoy it, but I don't think I'd concern myself with upgrades and if it needs something like a bearing, toss it out.

Do make sure it's level, the stylus is good, the tracking force is set right, and the arm moves freely so you don't damage your records.
