Those are ludicrous charges and I would'nt pay them but also many over here in Euro land refuse to pay the shipping costs that US companies expect clients to pay.
UPS/Fed-Ex etc. are a complete rip-off compared to USPS. I can only think that at the end of the financial year there is a kick-back of a certain percentage to the companies that use them.
I don't want or need something delivered yesterday at a stupidly high price. Bog standard USPS delivery does me fine. The standard service normally takes only 5 days to get to me here in Spain.
And even when a US company deigns to use USPS they quote the most ridiculously extreme cost: eg. a US cap maker - I wanted a number of their caps - total weight just under 1lb. This would make for a small package - shipping to Spain USPS most expensive shipping - $94 or by UPS/Fed-Ex $86 & $89 - do they really think people are that stupid to pay these kind of prices.
I once made the mistake of giving my cr/card details to a US company to buy 100ft of Techflex, very low weight. They stuck it in an overly large cardboard box and sent it Fed-Ex - Techflex $27, shipping $94. If they really cared about their clients they would have emailed me to let me first approve the disproportionate cost of shipping - they did'nt care. I made sure that many forums over here in Europe should know what this company was like.
The bad news for us over here in Europe is that Fed-Ex will almost certainly buy out TNT and we know what that means in terms of ramped up charges.
What I find so crazy is that not so long ago, most parcels went by road/rail/sea. So they took longer to arrive but at a fraction of the price.
Many Germans refuse to accept payment by cr/card or Paypal 3.5% +/- they only accept bank transfer. In northern Europe this is free or pennies only.
If more of us simply refused to do businees with these companies and told them why, things would change damn fast - in our favour.
