We had 701's and K1000's there. But they ran and hid when the camera came out

curious, was the Melos clearly the best amp choice with all the Grados?

Not for ALL of the grados.

With the HP-1000, the melos is the ideal choice, no questions. For the newer grados, its open for debate and victory does not always go to the melos.

the melos - heavily modded - sounded very good with all of the grados. i didn't experiment much with other amps. i did try an RS1 with a Cary 300B and that was an excellent combination as well. both are very good amps and that i think is what is important.

I wonder if this has anything to do with why the other AKGs ran and hid...

I wasn't at the meet, but I disagree strongly with the statement that a Melos is an ideal choice for the HP-1000. While I owned an HP-2, I found my Dynahi firmly whooped the Melos SHA-Gold in every area it possibly could, including soundstage, resolution, and the entire audio spectrum from the tippy toppy treble to the lowest of the low bass.

Just one man's opinion of course, but after living with the combo for several months I concluded that the Melos + HP2 synergy is pure hype.

In other news, thanks for the sweet Grado pic in the OP.

WHAT A COLLECTION!!!

I am a proud owner of the SR80s, and I will soon be the proudest owner of a set of GS1000s set up with an RA1 amp, and Reference Cable... mmmmmmm... That is going to be delicious! No matter what though, I doubt that I will have a collection like that in the near future, 10 points to you man!!!
