I would have to agree on the HD600 also for being neutral but thats only after recabling and years of break in. Then again with transparent being a criteria, the HD600 losses to the SA5000. The SA5000 is also easy to drive.

Your criteria is a neutral and accurate representation?
I'd go for the K701, no doubt.
My experience with headphones might not be huge, but this is what I've learned so far:

I've owned/own several Senns, including the HD650, some lower end STAX's, the K701's, and Shure E500's, and the most neutral and enjoyable are the K701's.
They might lack the "enhanced bass" of the HD650's, but they convey everything so accurately and flawlessly, you won't feel like you're missing out on anything.

Are there people out there who actually believe in this 'artist intended' nonsense when chances are that most of the artists make their sound for speakers?

I cast my vote for the HD600.

The HD600 do NOT take years to break in - there are some changes in the first 200 hours but nothing that alters the sound signature by a noticeable degree. And they are pretty neutral with the stock cable, just not as transparent and detailed as they would be with a better cable (I have been through many cables with the HD600, and do highly recommend a good cable once you have a good source and amp for them).

I have been listening to my HD600 with a balanced headphone amplifier A LOT over the past 2 weeks (since I got the new balanced amplifier) and I find the timbre and tone of instruments is much more accurate than with my Grado RS-1 or Proline 2500.

For neutrality AKG's K271 might just be a good choice. They are very popular in the studio environment, too.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the Alessandro MS-2i.

My same thoughts about the HD600 against most headphones I've listened to. The HD600 was my top headphone for years until the SA5000 came out. Even now if I listen to just the HD600 I still think it's the best. Its after switching to the SA5000 that the HD600 has to go back on the hook. I think the HD600 excels with strings and horns.

The perfect and completely transparent "headphone" will come the day we figure how to connect our digital players stream information directly through electrodes attached into our skulls or brains.
I'll volunteer as a happy guinea pig when that happens.
Attention Head-fiers!
Beyerdynamics is happy to announce the revolutionary in your head completely transparent headphones. Available 3/3/2035 at the special introductory price of 599.00 new dollars.

Hah! In your dreams buddy.
You've forgotten the debate over better connectors, cables and implants.

full-sized
open
circumaural headphones
reference sound
Untouched
neutral
transparent
"artist-intended" sound

I don't want emphasized bass, mids, or even highs.
I'm not looking for "pleasing-to-the-ear" sound

i would recommend the AKG K501 or the K701

you mentioned you have an amp - you will need a good amp.
