the starters kit

Weird that there isn't a board on audio systems, but I guess I'm at the right place.

I want to get a nice starters kit for my home audio system. My primary source is my PC from a portable HardDisk.

I want a couple of nice speakers which will last a nice couple of years. I'm thinking of getting them second handed but am totally clueless which speakerbrands are considered as bad/good/best quality.

Then I don't really know if I have to get a DAC or a receiver or an amplifier or whatever. Again I don't know which brands are considered the best for their price.

Also; i've been checking out the orb audio site and I'm colored interested. Does anyone have any experience with these speakers, because I like the smallness of them.

My budget is around 500 euro/700 dollar.

There's a mountain of information around here and on the internet... Decide which components you need and work out a rough budget for each one. Speakers should be your biggest expense, then the transport/source/DAC and amplifier, and finally the cables, tweaks, etc. Pick one of those components to focus on and begin your search.

You already have the transport, which will be your computer. What kind of sound card do you have? Depending on what it is, you might want to upgrade, even if digital transmission is your only consideration. You may even decide to use your sound card as your DAC. If that's the case, all you'll need is an integrated amplifier and the speakers. A standalone DAC is always an option, but you could also use the DAC section of a home theater receiver, which would act as your amp as well.

There are pros and cons to all of these setups, but your budget and space preferences will narrow it down.

I have not heard the Orb Audio speakers, but I would not recommend them for the same reason that I would not recommend Bose. They are known for the size of their speakers, but their actual performance is questionable.
