Bitrate Preference? - Page 3

Like someone mentioned above...lossless is the way to archive due to the low storage costs.

My collection of FLAC grows by the day. I move it to the ipod in v0 when I get the chance.

Gezhh... I use my all powerful iBuds and can't tell the difference between a 64 kbps mp3 and a wav file, so I use that!!

I use FLAC for the computer with bit-matched playback on and -q5 OGG Vorbis tbh on portable. I've done ABX tests with -v0 mp3 (LAME 3.97) and -q5 vorbis (OggDropXPd aoTuVb5.5) and there is minimal difference with the -q5 vorbis being slightly better (only really 2-3% tbh).

The diminishing returns of Ogg Vorbis goes from -q5 IMO.
If you care to prove me wrong, I'd be glad to read it (and re-encode my Vorbis collection from FLAC/CD :P)

A lot of people are using MP3 and I was too but a while back I needed smaller files so I went with MP3@64Kbs. Howver, when playing sad files on my player they sounded awful. I tried WMA@64 and it sounded sweet. I couldn't tell the difference between the WMA@64 and higher bitrate of eith MP3 or AAC files.

I've been using WMA for smaller capacity players ever since. Honestly, I can't tell much of a difference with the OGG files, either.

Agreed. However, I chose -q6 because I understood that it was that quality level and above that preserved "lossless stereo coupling." Not totally rational here as I don't actually know precisely what that means, but I thought it meant the stereo image would be preserved exactly as it is with lossless encoding.

320kbps MP3 is a good compromise.

mmmm....ok, interesting.

Time to re-encode in -q6 then.
Gogo quad-cores at IT school!
the OGGDropXPd application utilises the quads perfectly, great coding concerning that.
