Q: Best personal disc player under $100?

Here's what I need:

Must play CD-R's
Line out
AA's
Portable, of course



No car kit, etc., Don't need to pay for what I won't use.

Looking for good quality line out. Most other features (except the plays CDR's) are not that important.

Prefer a brand I have actually heard of!

Ummm, let me answer this one.....Why not do a search? This question gets asked by a newbie once every 3 or so days....while I don't want to be unhelpfull, I probably have some record on asking repetitive questions, the best thing is to do a search...check out Duncan's excellent review on legendary Sony discmen...alot of usefull information there...also, the panasonic 570 has been favorably reviewed and meets your criteria....

Well, I am a newbie here, but not to message boards.

I searched and saw lots of stuff on older Sony's and some current models compared but didn't see anything that addressed my question of the CD-R's, too.

The CD-R's pretty much eliminates much of the older, better(?) stuff.

There doesn't seem to be a decent portable (i.e. good qual line out) out there that plays CD-R's for under $100. I still ned to check out the suggestion I seem to have just gotten above, tho. Maybe I should just get a home model for my desk and forget about the portability. They are out there a dime a dozen for 99.95.

I am looking into it, but can't find any reference to a line out in anyone's specs on it. Seems to be available lotsa places for <$100, tho. Perfect.

Just double-checking to make sure you are sure on the line out.

Um, it may come as a shock to you, but older players do play CD-R's. The Sony D-141 does, I know. Some models may have trouble with the lighter colored CD-R's. I myself use Fujifilm, made by Taiyo Yuden. (sp?) Excellent quality.

Cool...

I just happen to use the lighter ones - my company has them in bulk - so I assumed CDR's just didn't work with my Sony home deck. I will try the other brands (such as the Fuji) and see if I squeak by with them.

Dude, you may have just saved me $100 on the purchase of another home player. Where do I send your 50% cut? (Or the beer...)

I was actually suprised by it as well. I put a CD-R in my grandparents Sony CDP just for the heck of it, as we were about ready to get a new one. Suprise, suprise, it played. Then I realized that Orange Book is pretty much just a replica of Red Book, and that there's no reason why it shouldn't read.

As for the beer, I'm 15, sorry. (I will take the 50% if you insist, though

To back up Stephanovich's claim... all of the PCDPs in my review can play CDRs perfectly ~ CDRW is another story though... only the D-EJ1000 does out of my current collection

Yeah, CD-RW is different. The material used in phase change isn't nearly as reflective as standard dye.

What makes me wonder is how different units can read -RW. It has to be the same wavelength and whatnot of the laser, correct?

Within (hopefully) the next 10 days, the Optimus CD3400 and Sony D515 (and maybe the D151 if anyone deems it worth my while) will be added to the review

Well, your review has helped me (and I'm sure many more, judging by the number of pages after your review...) in making decisions.

I've never seen a D25S, nor even a picture. A Google didn't turn up anything. How does it compare to, say, a 555?

those old sonys arent that portable go with a iRiver SlimX 350, im selling mine right now for $90 shipped in the US. I love it but i just got an iPod which i can honestly say is the only portable i like more
