Those drivers are sexy.  I think the center is actually the glowing of an audio breathing dragon's fire that is trapped inside each cabinet.

Forgive me, I just finished reading The Hobbit again.

Paired with 250+ Watts/ch tube amps? Reaching concert-level at low distortion is not a problem

235 watts for 96 db per channel?! Why? (Are those KT88 or 66 btw?)  I'm running Jensen P15LL with Altec 802b Horns with a combined efficiency of 98 db and only using about 10 watts at max and can certainly drive them past ear bleeding volumes.  Had a vintage pair of Tannoy Super Reds before the Jensens, so I definitely share your appreciation of those speakers.  Those are absolutely gorgeous cabinets!!!!

Thanks guys. Have had a lot of fun with them since they landed Friday.

The power is overkill, but I do like to run 'em loud. At least on the Kensington it was no content between these and the lowered powered Rogue Stereo 90 & Atlas. I like these Apollo monoblocks a lot, and tube rolling them yields an "appropriate" impact on the sound (for tuning purposes). Also love VAC gear, but their stuff I've played with has a decided voicing that's not as easily swayed by tubes.

I've (accidentally) hit audible clipping @ 60 Watts and 93dB/Watt, on a high dynamic range recording (Sheffield Labs' Direct-to-Disc recording of Firebird Suite). The more headroom between me and that again, the better. You want real overkill? I have a friend running his Tannoy Kingdom Royal with four VAC Statement 450 monoblocks. The bi-amping arrangement is a relatively recent addition; gotta get over and hear it soon. Passive bi-amping makes more sense than usual with Tannoys, since the crossover point of ~1.1kHz (larger models) is near-ish the 50/50 splitting point of equal audio energy.

The power tubes are KT120, which were a substantial improvement over the stock KT90. Haven't tried KT88 or KT66 in these amps, though I've thought hard about the Reissue Gold Lion KT66, which sounded sweet in a pair of Heathkit W5. However, sourcing a dozen of something new -- just to try it -- isn't tons of fun.

Heh, I like that. The part you see is a solid steel horn; the tweeter diaphragm is hidden behind that. I've always been a sucker for the orange-gold color they apply to it in the upper Prestige line. Glimmers and looks totally awesome when you get a little bit of sunlight in the room.

Man, almost anything will sound great with those Tung-Sol 6sn7 round plates! But I bet those R10 and Qualia 010 are pretty decent in their own right, too ;)

I'm still torn between whether I regret selling the Qualia or L3000 more, but damn if the HD650 isn't pretty nice for dirt cheap! Would like that balanced Headamp Gilmore Reference back, in any case...

Tough call on the L3000 or Qualia.  I'd say the Qualia given how wonderful its capable of with a balanced drive and proper fit.
