Tjoeb & Headphones - Page 2

post #16 of 19
Yeah, I get suspicious when reviewers start calling stuff "giantkiller". I figure if you get a good value for the money, then what more do you want? The Ah! isn't that cheap. The Sony 333Es went for less. I still think it's a good value.

Come On Guys Get Your Shit Together :)

Stereophile has not reviewed the AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000. They have reviewed the Ah! Tjoeb 99. This is listed in their recommended components under class D. The 4000 replaces the 99. If you actually read the review you cannot say they panned it but they stated that it has a tubey sound and if you like that then its for you. Sam Tellig didn't particularly like it but then again I'm not sure if you want to take his word as gospel. IMO.

Plans = changed.

Alright -- this has all been quite helpful. I think, taking inferences from the posts above, that perhaps I should first purchase a headphone amp, then later consider a new CDP (and perhaps even then reconsider my Tjoeb leanings).

In case you're following the progress, I'm therefore now leaning towards the purchase of a MG Head amp, driven by a portable CD player for now, with the intention of buying a new CDP in ~ 4-6 months.

Many thanks for the input -- please by all means feel free to continue.

Yeah, Stereophile doesn't pan things. They say that ok things are good, good things are great, and great things are giant killers.

Anyway, I agree that taking Stereophile as gospel is dangerous because they
a) are not you
and
b) are a bit wonky with some of their suggestions (Freezing CDs? please...)
