Yes indeed, what I ment was that you can't use a standard iPod dock cable, it has to be one specially designed for an iMod.

I noticed iMod has silent n dark background with better control but ipod classic line out is amazing. To me the difference is not significant but present.

Ditto. I sold mine (iMod) because I was tired of having to use only special LODs, and I never really thought it was worth total price it demanded (modify the iPod, use special LODs, and then have to use an amp).

iMod worth the value.
The sound is completely different and better than any other portable sources, except portable sources wich have an numerique out line.
To enjoy immediately imod, pvcaps are preconise and make a great difference with an regular ipod.
Black gates are great (wich are in the ALO imod cables by example), but need long time of burn in before obtain a real improvement compare to regular lod.
So may be is the reason why, some people don't heard a great improvement.

get yourself a vcap dock too, if you thought the improvement was good from imod over classic, wait till you throw those babies into the mix.

Does an iMod still use the stock firmware, or is it Rockbox'd? As well, if one wanted a longer iMod cable (around 3 ft in length) so they can carry their amp and player separately, would it be possible, and would be it affordable?

firmware is up to you. Im sure you can find a good lod that is long and is made for the imod. it will likely be expensive.

I am tempted, but I just can't justify the cost and having to carry round an additional box for portable use. At home I have access to all my files in WAV format through my Squeezebox/Lavry DAC, so the iMod is only used as a portable. It is also hard to justify that big an investment when the iMod is only likely to function for a couple of years, and will probably be superceded at some point.

You can use either stock firmware or Rockbox. I'm thinking of using Rockbox, but will wait until all my files are converted to ALAC first. For the cable, you can use a female iMod dock and then the cable of your choice. I didn't want the ALO LOD that came with the iMod so arranged to purchase it just with the female dock, which also worked out cheaper, and I use it with a Cardas mini-mini.

Fair enough but it is a different beast with the vcaps, steven kelby makes the vcap dock cheaper than alo.
