Portable Showdown: Ultrasone Edition 7 vs ALO Edition 9 [Impressions] - Page 2

And for what it's worth (and to most people my opinion's worth nothing), after I bought the Edition 9, I owned both it and the L3000 together for a few months. I tried many times to listen to the L3000 during that time, but couldn't for very long -- it never came close to the musical experience I get from the Ed. 9.

In the past two weeks I picked up a new RS-1 and JVC DX1000 just to try. They are not broken in yet, so I don't have any final opinions yet, but so far they don't hold a candle to the Ed. 9 either.

I guess it's just that everyone's ears and tastes are different, but I don't understand how people don't hear what I do when listening to the Ultrasones. Oh well.

bdh, people like you who dwell in the background need to post a bit more

Also on the highlighted statement above......................
Care if you expand on that? That's saying a lot, because experience is all I'm after right now
and that's a big factor behind the purchase of my incoming woodie headphone.

It might be that people have not listened enough to have their "brain burn-in". When I first listened Ed9 they sounded the worst headphone I have ever heard. It took maybe eight hours over four days to make them the sweetest sounding thing I have heard.

Maybe the same effect is in play if I nowadays listen let's say HD-650. They sound very nice and airy, but I quickly get annoyed of listening "just a recording on a headphone".

I'm sure some of it is that. Especially at meets. But I'm talking about people like Purk, Skylab, markl, etc. who have owned all of these phones and have lots of experience. I think they must just like a different kind of sound and maybe listen differently than I do. I had a hard time understanding that for awhile, and while I still don't understand it, it doesn't bother me anymore.

I think that many people have bought into their own myth-making when it comes to the out of production headphones like the L3000. Don't get me wrong, IME it is a very good headphone. But then the goodness gets exaggerated by the myth/mystique especially in comparison to a new comer like the Edition 9.

Another factor is that with some old-timers it has become "cool" to dis certain products like the Edition 9. Before I bought the Edition 9 I did a number of PMs with some old-timers. One in private PM told me in no uncertain terms that the Edition 9 was a very good headphone and on a level with other top tier headpones. Yet they preferred the L3000, which is fine.

But on another site where the Edition 9 is regularly dissed, they really called it crap. So they either lied to me big time, or they joined in with what it was "cool" to say on that site. I've come to realize that there are lot of ways to have vested interests when it comes to gear. One of the ways is to maintain a sense of exclusivity about established out of production gear. Its just another variation of the "old boys club" and elitism.

I don't think that the Edition 9 is perfect or the best headphone in the world. There are a number of things wrong with it. But there are things wrong with any headphone. The L3000 doesn't have a great soundstage, the R-10 is weak in the bass especially for rock, etc. Its like everything else in audio, there are trade offs.

^At least you know there are more than a few who love listening to the Ed9 in head-fi.
I almost forgot I even wrote this thread . I'd like to do an update.

This is what head-fi does to people

Less than a month ago, the man was happy with his Pro750's. Fast forward now, he breaks down and orders his own Edition 9

Resurrected

I loved the ED9's until buying the HD800's. The HD800 had clarity and detail I had never heard before. I was able to hear echo and reverb in vocals that were seemingly concealed by the bass of the ed-9's. Sounds that were some how merged together with the 9's were now clear and distict.

In the end I stuck with the 9's and returned the 800's. The HD-800 simply lacked the bass I had grown used to, but my view of the 9's changed.

Enter the Edition 8's which seem to combine the best attributes of both HP's. They are my new reference phones.
