On your list, I voted for Cassandra Wilson: her voice is the hue of the darkest of nights. But my absolute favorite is Patti Austin: I have the fortune to see her live and it was an amazing experience -- she is as good a singer as a story-teller and stand-up comedian.

I picked Ella, but I could really pick any of the first 5 you listed.

I voted for Ella, but Carmen McRae needs to be on that list. I guess she's other...

I voted for someone else: Lucy Ann Polk.

Polk won the Downbeat "Best Girl-Singer with Band" award in 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1954.

It's a shame she didn't record more albums.

Can't believe Billie hasn't been voted for yet.... I was sure she would win.......I voted for Sarah, but Billie was a close second.

I had to go for Nina, but my favourite would have to be Cleo Laine- personal reason being the fact that she was behind the formation of on of the finest jazz venues in the south of England, where i was privileged to see Tommy Emmanuel work his magic on his Maton . Happy happy memories

( bugger i missed the vote for someone else option )

No need. It seems from the posts here that several folks here understand Billie's importance, even if she's not their subjective "favorite." Me, I'd say feel bad for Carmen McCrae, who inexplicably didn't make the cut. Then Dinah Washington, and then maybe Abbey Lincoln, who pretty much mentored Cassandra Wilson. And geez, where is poor, poor amazing Peggy Lee?

Ella closely followed by Lady Day. Billie Holiday had an emmotional weight that no singer has reached ever after. Ella gets close, but has better technique, better voice and a wider vocal range, hence my vote.

Impossible for me to choose between Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. They've ruled it for me since forever...

My nomination for greatest female jazz vocal performance of all-time is Sarah's "Autumn Leaves," from her album "Crazy and Mixed Up." Anyone?
