Creek OBH-11, deal or no deal?

Well i was browsing craigslist the other day and i saw a brand new Creek OBH-11 headphone amp for 75 bucks. I knew they retailed for about $200 so i sent the seller an email and am a paypal click away from purchasing.

Today i decided to do some reading about this amp on headfi and it doent look like i am getting such a great deal afterall. The reviews dont seem to promising.

Currently i am using either a portable ibasso P2 or the integrated headphone amp in my marantz cd player to drive my HD580s. I am wondering if it is worth the $75 bucks and if i will even see an improvment over my ibasso/integrated amp for home use. Should i just save for a better amp or pull the trigger on the creek?

The Creek OBH-11 is an older amp. I believe you're better off with your current setup.

Well for some reason used OBH-11 have good resell value so if you get it and don't like it you could probably get back what you paid for it. The MSRP for the Creek is way to high but $75 seems like a good price to me. So if you just want to try it out.....

It was a decent amp when I owned it but you definitely need to upgrade the stock power supply to either the obh-2 or the much cheaper Elpac equivalent (part #WM080-1950-760). The Creek has a nice dark tone and has some tube like qualities to it. It is just nowhere near as dynamic as the next level $200 plus amps. My $150 Little Dot MK II destroyed it sound quality wise. I had a $70 portable Headstage Lyrix and while the Creek beat it in Bass the Lyrix compared well.

If I were you I would save my money and get a nice entry level tube amp like a Darkvoice or a Little Dot.

I liked the one I had well enough. $75 is a great price - I'd say pick it up and see if you like it. If not, you should be able to get $100 or more for it on Audiogon or eBay.

Age of a design doesn't much matter. Most tube amps we have today could have been built in the 1940s.

The Creek might be a good DIY tweak project if your so inclined

PS So true Uncle E, some old 30's and 40's era Westinghouse theater amps go for mad money on Feebay The iron on those I suspect is the real prize

well i think im going to pull the trigger on this, if it doesnt work out for me, i can always try to turn it for a profit on ebay or something

well i got the amp today and i am enjoying it very much. However it had no power supply, so i had to buy one of those... If anyone else is interested, the seller i bough this from has 8 more of these amps, i can give you his contact information if you are interested...
