It is about time with over six months in, isn't it? I can't add much interesting but love to read the thoughts and lists!

What has been the good stuff so far?

--

In the Spirit:

1. Portishead - Third
2. Clark - Turning Dragon
3. Thomas Brinkmann - When Horses Die
4. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
5. Autechre - Quaristice

I was most disappointed with Booka Shade - The Sun and the Neon Light and Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

Totally agree with Portishead Third.
Only other album you list which I have heard is Autechre, I sort of like it but haven't given it enough of a chance yet.

My list:

Portishead Third
Boris Smile
Shearwater Rook
Las Flores Project Colores y Memorias

and for the fifth I am actually liking the new Air France EP quite a lot. Just got most of the songs a few days ago so I need to give it some more time though.

you were dissappointed with the Wolf Parade album? How does it compare to Apologies to the Queen Mary? That album is very, very good I think.

Another great release is Jichael Mackson's Same But Different. Only two songs, each about 13 minutes but very promising. Hopefully Jichael Mackson is not only a great song writer but has the ability to create a coherent collection of songs in an album.

1. Orchestra Baobab - Made in Dakar
2. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
3. Wadada Leo Smith Golden Quartet - Tabligh
4. Mayra Andrade - Navega
5. Robert Forster - The Evangelist

Actually, I've got even more; first year in awhile that I've discovered so many likeables by mid-year. Hope it keeps up.

In no paticular order these are the albums that have impressed me so far this year. I doubt very much they constitute the best, but for one reason or another they stuck out. I've got another half year to figure out what was "best".

Fleet Foxes - S/T
NIN - The slip
Portishead - Third
Crystal Castles - S/T
M83 - Saturdays = Youth

Additionally there's two EPs that wow'd me
Smashing Pumpkins - American Gothic
Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant

The only real disappointments were Opeth not putting out a stellar album (still very good, and lots of listened time out of me), and Death Cabs Narrow Stairs... which is still oodles better then Plans.

My list includes some 2007 releases, only because I buy vinyl and it sometimes takes so long for some titles to be released on vinyl...

My favorites so far, in no particular order are

Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
Old 97's - Blame It On Gravity
Hayes Carll - Trouble In Mind
Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch
Levon Helm - Dirt Farmer
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash
Lifesavas - Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack.
Common Market - Black Patch War

Lupe Fiasco's The Cool may make the cut, but I haven't listened to it enough to decide yet.

Most all my other purchases were from older albums. (lots and lots and lots)

Damn, didn't know there was a new Orchestra Baobab out! How does it compare to Pirate's Choice or Specialist In All Styles?

My likes so far for the year . . .

Opeth - Watershed

I've read a couple good reviews about Air France; might check that out. As for Zooner, maybe that Queen Mary was so damn good was a big part of my disappointment. The new one sounds more studio and calculated, less easy. The garage energy is gone. I'm also a little tired of Indie rock, so maybe the album hasn't received my fair shake.

It's yet another perfect album; if only all band reunions could be as stunning as theirs has been. They revamp a few of their classic tunes from the '70s, but there's new stuff, too. Youssou N'Dour sings on one of the oldies.

TimJo, 2x on that Hayes Carll disc.

It's been pretty decent so far this year. In no particular order...

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple

I just got the new Sigur Ros album yesterday, so I haven't developed a solid opinion if it yet. The first listen was pretty darn good though. Looking at the lists above tells me I have a lot of research to do.
