Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue

I just picked this up earlier in the week, and I must say that I'm very pleased with what I've got.

This is one of those albums that reaches almost cult status, mostly for the fact that it went 30+ years out of circulation. Apparently, a number of influential musicians have praised it over the years. I've never heard it, and decided to give it a try.

Well, my first impressions are VERY positive. It sounds a lot more current than I would have expected, and it's a good listen overall. I highly recommend it.

Anyone else give this one a listen?

I saw it at a shop last week, and I almost got it, but wanted to read a review before I sprung for it cause the vinyl is kinda expensive (although it is three discs I believe).

Did you get the vinyl or the CD? I was curious about the quality of the pressings, although I've always had good luck with Sundazed releases.

The vinyl pressing is really good. I've got about fifteen different records on the Sundazed label and they are all good to very good.

Yup, the reissue was the first time I listened to the album and its easily my favorite album of the year so far

Just read this review on amazon :-

The vinyl pressing is terrible. The 3 records are warped and off center with many pops, clicks, crackles and distortion.

Put me off a bit. Tom, do you have the vinyl of this or just other sundazed releases ?

Who else has the vinyl ?

Mine arrived in just fine. Minimum surface noise and good production. I have not had any of the problems you mentioned with my sundazed pressings. I was even suprised by the Wilson album because I almost never buy colored vinyl, due to fact it rarely sounds as good to me.

Based on tom's (both elrod and hankins) good reviews, I picked up the vinyl set yesterday, and I am now listening for the first time. So far, I am actually quite impressed because it doesn't sound like something from '77. If I heard some of these tracks on the radio, I'd assume it was a current release. I'm only into the first lp so far, but I like it even more than I thought I was going to.

As far as the pressing goes, I also was a bit nervous about the blue vinyl, because I've never had the greatest luck with colored vinyl. That being said, it is pretty quiet. Listening with my DT880's, I can certainly hear some surface noise between tracts, but no worse than most vinyl being released nowadays, and less so as compared to some "audiophile" pressings I have bought in the past from Classic. The mastering is very good, and the packaging is great, including reproductions of the original inserts and Caribou labels on the lps. Typical Sundazed goodness not skimping on any of the details.

I'm surprised that the colored vinyl has turned out so well. I've also had VERY bad luck with it over the years. I have an old pink Cub Koda album that is so bad it's close to unlistenable...and it was like that right out of the package!!

I do think that one of the interesting things about this album is how current it sounds. As a basis for comparison, it's much more so than Smile by brother Brian. I'm still getting to know it, but I like it a lot.

Agreed. I listened to it all the way through once again yesterday and I like it better than Smile at this point. I've never been a big Beach Boys fan, but I have a great appreciation for what they produced. It seems like Dennis could have had a huge career, possibly ending up to be better known than Brian in the end, if his life hadn't gotten in the way of things. It is so sad how great minds sometimes spiral out of control before their time... I'm just glad that James Guercio persevered and got all the unreleased stuff out in a good production. Listening to the Bambu cuts, it could have been a big album.
