I want to see how mini-XLR pans out (if indeed it does) before I shell out the cash. The prices are too high right now.

Who knows? Maybe the K701 is on its way out...which means it could turn into the next K1000....

On this point, I beg to differ. My Moon Audio recabled 701s are gorgeous.

I also think the k701 looks pretty slick. only been able to listen to it for a short min, on a ss amp, so I'm not sure If I can really share on sound.

Both of the major visible changes AKG made, namely the color and the cable, are ostensibly for professional recording reasons. Headphones, like all gear that is light enough to pick up, gets abused in a studio. Notably, the white was getting scuffed, and the cord was probably getting rolled over, caught in doors, stretched repeatedly, etc.

The XLR termination says to potential purchasers: "When you destroy my cord you don't have to buy a whole new set of headphones".

This approach seems sensible if AKG wishes to position the 701 as an upgrade to their venerable k240/340 studio 'phones -- and why wouldn't they?
