Aussie group buy for Starving Student
Jul 1, 2008 at 4:12 AM Post #32 of 130
Hi guys, after checking with a few sources, the cheapest I can get these power supplies with Australian power cables is AUD$20 each plus postage (I'll cover initial postage to me, but you'll have to pay from me to your location). Apparently Cisco's price to suppliers in Australia is about $45, so this is pretty good for local pricing!

I considered buying from the USA, but after calculating unit costs, shipping costs, currency conversion fees, and having to source Aussie power leads, it makes sense to just buy them locally.

I will place the order at close of business today.

Not a bad idea Pandaman. I'm happy to have the power supplies shipped to whomever... they can even handle the financial side too if they like!

jarpy? rjad?

Yeah, seems like a good idea, not sure about timing, since to save postage all items have to get to the one address before getting packed up and sent out again. I don't mind doing it from here (Brisbane)--let me know.

Put me down for a 2 sets of tubes and 2 sockets. And also a power supply. I'm pretty bummed I missed out on the order from mouser. Is anyone else interested in buying those parts and we can split the postage?

I only need a few of the parts, (and some not related to this build) but I'd go in on an order.

So are we sending the power supplies to rjad to keep it all centralized and lower shipping costs overall?

Yep, I'll order power supplies and tubes, to come to my address, from where I'll send them out to individuals. This will save on postage. The only possible change is if jarpy jumps in and says send them all to him--in which case he could bundle everything up.

Yeah, I can do that. The hard part will be dividing up the resistors and caps, so doing the valves and power supplies will be a minor inconvenience by comparison

Just to keep everything above board, I don't know how much postage will cost with everything bundled up. If the package goes over 500g then a $5.30 AusPost satchel ain't going to cover it.

rjad, can you help me out with a list of what should go to who?

I'll PM my shipping address

This is getting complicated

I don't know if it applies here, but I reckon the difference between a (2 prong) US cable and an Australian cable is 30 seconds with a pair of pliers.

The pins are the right distance apart, they just need a bit of persuasion to take on the characteristic Aussie V-shape.

Unfortunately jarpy, I didn't want to make that assumption. Plus, buying locally you get a 30 day return to base warranty.

Jingo Lingo, after spending another $5 at Tandy, it'll cost more than buying it in Australia!

I know we were all enticed by the USD$8 price on these things, but at the end of the day it isn't that straightforward when you include all the other factors.

Btw, Jingo Lingo... just a confirmation that you're also in for 1 power supply.

Where things currently stand:
rjad is co-ordinating the payments for the power supplies with the supplier, and should be having them shipped to jarpy who will be doing distribution. Thanks for that jarpy... it sounds like a bit of a logistical challenge!

So, I assume everyone who's in will be paying rjad for the valves, sockets and power supplies, and jarpy for the components and postage. Correct?
