It is quite portable, and has a built in headphone amp powerful enough for your 701's.

The only potential drawback in terms of absolute audiophile sound quality potential is that it is a firewire device, so there is no external power supply. That being said, I use it with headphones and on my Linn room system, and I can't say that the internal power supply filtering in the Duet has been an audible issue for me. After all they make it for professional recording, and so you have to believe that the design is pretty good, or they would have included an option for an external power supply.

I know you said that you don't record, but if at some point you decide to get into vinyl, then it will allow you to make needle-drops using GarageBand, and the quality is extremely good.

BTW, if you buy one through Guitar Center, they have a 30 day return policy, no questions asked, so it is risk free if you were to get it and decide it is not for you.
Thanks for taking the time!.. Yes, we do have a Guitar Center nearby, so might as well pick this one up to try, for those 2-3 weeks I'll be looking for something else. And we might ending up keeping it, since my college-aged son does record (the kind of music many people mention saying "I listen to pretty much everything except ***"), he's got a good mike and not-so-good PC-based setup. He's a good kid and earns some money, so perhaps I could give him the Duet if he buys himself an iMac
Vinyl - I had a collection, long ago and far away... Not ready for returning to vinyl yet...

TimJo, I see in your profile you also have a HR Micro DAC - how does that one compare to the Duet?

I am using a SB Duet (with the built-in dac) for my Akg rig, I think it's quite good for the Akg K1k and I like the remote is really handy. For my headphone rig, I am using an external dac because a headphone reveals more details (k1k is actually an ear speaker and not a phone).

Thanks for the tip! The Logitech SB built-in dac is not a great dac actually, I have read somewhere that it STILL uses opamp (or a simular term).
That's actually the same dac I ordered just a while ago

Honestly, I'm not aware of a better DAC in terms of price to performance, than the Headamp Pico.

The right way to do it is streaming audio. playing the songs from your harddrive, not from your cheap pc drive...so the best setup would be, squeezebox 3, external dac, pc!
How does IPOD lossless --> dac --> head phone amp --> head phones compare to the above mentioned set-up? Can an IPOD --> external DAC?

thanks!

An iPod has a built-in dac; which means the audio stream has been altered already and when you would connect it to a an external dac it wouldn't be processed anymore (analog signal). By the way all dacs only have digital inputs. So you wouldn't be able to connect an iPod to an ext. dac. There is a method to get a digital audio stream out of an iPod, check out Wadio iTransport.
Sorry for my "bad" English.
