[REVIEW] 18 IEM reviewed and compared!!! (Final update NOV 2, 08)
Nov 6, 2008 at 12:54 PM Post #288 of 335
I had the E3, and I agree with your review.

I had the UM2, and I agree with your review.

I have the ER4P, which (extraneously) are not present in your list, and I think indeed they are better than UM2, and I doubt there is something better around for me. (I am a detail-headed, not musical)

Congrats for the great review.

Bump.

Just to give a chance to those who haven't read the thread lately a chance to vote, plus an announcement: There won't be any more new IEM review added to this thread. Instead, I will start another thread (of similar style ) for all future IEM review, with new review rig setup and music selection. I will still reference the new review and rating against those IEM reviewed / compared here. Questions regarding IEM in this review will still be answered, so no worry there.

Great to know, Cli. You might add some of the current IEMs to the other thread, ie the Triple.fi, to show where the new IEMs will be placed against the current best.

I wonder why this topic was never stickied, this should help answer a lot of questions the newer members are asking.

i have the Soundmagic PL-30's and definitely agreed with what you have to say, and many others do too, so I think I can take your word for it.

Lots of people said the Soundmagics had lots of bass, but I wanted more! I guess my only option is the Atrio M5? Also was thinking of the ER-4p. I have Grados and love the way they sound with crisp highs and great bass. You said the Atrio M5 lacked in "fine upper treble detail". If I want clear, crisp highs, will I be disappointed with what the M5 has to offer? I'm thinking the M5 might be the best option for me since I'm such a basshead.

Most IEM have a highlighted treble to show off more detail, but not in the case of Atrio. It is not that Atrio doesn't have any detail, just not highlighted - which is why many people have commented its being not fatigue.

Using a speak set as analog, Atrio will be like having the sub-woofer directly in front of you while the tweeter at 10 feet away. Many other IEM will be like having the tweeter in front and the sub-woofer 10 feet (or more) away.

If you like Grado, that chance is you'll like more forward mid and a little sparkling on treble, something Atrio is not famous for. For your description, I think UM2 (or perhaps SE530) might be more fitting but it is more expensive. However, it is hard to be disappointed with Atrio - it might be different from what you are looking for, but it is still an excellent IEM for its price.

I disliked the Atrios with all my strength. It's hard to forget such a horrible midrange (unmatched by any other IEM I tried in its awfulness).

I don't find the mid range to be horrible (or even bad). My biggest complain on Atrio's SQ is its bass - its is too forwarded by its own and seems to discontinued from the rest of the spectrum (which distort the overall soundstage and image). If they can push the bass backward or bring the mid a bit forward, I'll be very happy with it. I am not sure how well the reversion 2 compare to the original design though. Nevertheless, I still find it to be a good contender on the ~$150 category.

*btw Tony, do your remember whether your RE1 come with foam inside the housing?

Any chance of reviewing the Super.Fi 5EB's? I have these and they are the best bass in an IEM I've ever heard, but was wondering how the bass compared with the Atrio's

5Eb will very unlikely to be reviewed by me, unless someone decided to loan me a set.

Hey, I just found your post. If you mean the filter, it was thear. I haven't opened the RE1 housing, so I can't help you in that regard.

Wow. thanks. I was unsure considering TF10's as my next pair of IEM's and it looks like you did rate them high, so it definitely cleared that spot up a bit
