Ray Samuels Emmeline II Raptor or WooAudio's WA6 Fully Modded?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I am currently looking at two amps to drive my AKG K701's w/ Silver Dragon cable and I need to know which company is better.

1) Ray Samuels Emmeline II Raptor

or

2) WooAudio's WA6 fully moded

If they about even in terms of sound quality then the next most important thing for me is customer service...

I listen to classic rock, dance/techno, some classical and female vocals... (I also like my music loud. Just a little FYI before making your suggestion)

There has been a lot of talk about both amps on here but I haven't seen them matched up against one another.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. (Before I lay out cash for something that's not going help).

Regards
Tom

Personally I would choose the Raptor I think. I'm not sure though. I dunno.

At a previous meet, the Raptor seemed to impress me more but they only brief listenings so my opinion is not good. Woo amps are great though. You best bet is to audition both.

Read The Reviews...

If you can't hear them for yourself... just do some searches and read all the reviews.

The WA6 with full upgrades gets much better reviews / comments.

Perhaps, the question should be: SP Extreme, or WA6 Maxed...

I just went through the same process. I got a Raptor from Ray and stock WA6from Jack. I wanted to compare now, and waiting for a Maxxed 6 and than waiting for it to burn in just wasn't going to work. If you search for a similar thread you can read my review. They are both great, great amps. I liked them both so much, I kept both. They were both excellent from a customer service standpoint, A++.

You really can't go wrong. The short of my review is the Raptor is very detailed and impactful. The WA6 has that lush, warm, tubey sound. It really depends what you are after. My recommendation, get both if you can, they are different enough to justify the extra money. I will be sending my 6 back to 6 to get it Maxxed in July. Sorry that I can't point you in one direction, they are both just too good.

I strongly suggest you get the pseudo dual power supply.

Anybody know how much WA charges for the pseudo dual power supply mod?

WooAudio all the way.

I am confused when you all refer to a WA6 fully modded. Are you referring to the new WA6 SE with seperate power supply? That is the unit I have ordered and am excitedly expecting it to ship next week. While I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ray and his products, I was wooed (pun intended) by the Woo Audio product.

Customer Service are both very high. No edge there.

WA6 Maxxed is my choice. They both sound good. But there are some things with the single box design that I really like. It is solid for one thing, when you move around you are not going to yank it off the shelf. And rolling the Rectifier in the WA6 can give you several upgrades right there.

Cheers,

It is the WA6 with the Caps upgraded chef. The SE is just released.

Or the "Premium parts upgrade package" from woo's website.

another vote for the woo

Both companies do a fine job. The 6 modified has different capacitors, coupling caps, tube bias caps and maybe something else. The pseudo dual supply is a divided supply for the power section rather than one cap for both sections. I have done that for years and then did it with the 6 and detailed this to Woo Audio some time back. The SE already has the pseudo dual supply and the tubes are direct coupled so no coupling cap is used and the output transformers are different for high frequency improvement but frankly after the pseudo dual supply on the standard 6 I find that the highs and lows are much improved as are other areas.

I was referring to the WA6 with the upgrades, not the SE. Comparing the SE to the Raptor is really an unfair comparison - since the SE is so much more expensive.
