AKG K702 - imminent release! - Page 2

Its all a marketing ploy to get people to buy new headphones. New color, model #, and detachable cable, which is nice, but I can live without it. I wonder if the impedance will change or if AKG will address the K701,s need for a powerful amp and make it easier to drive. I am sure some people will like the K702 and I am sure that many people will prefer the older models like K340 and K501 to the newer, only time will tell. Headphone preference is subjective and opinions seem to always vary as to whats best, it all comes down to personal preference.

Frankly speaking, I didn't like the 701s very much, they sounded WEIRD to me. Sorry for saying so, but it's true. Hope the 702s can suprise me a little.

what makes you think they can increase the sensitivity of the driver and keep the same sound signature?

I didn't say one way or the other about a driver change being made. I was just thinking about all the things most people complain about the K701; the cables, lack of bass, which I think for most people is an amp issue. I own the K701 and I really don't have any complaints about its sound. For me the K701 are a keeper and I am really satisfied with them. I just think that a lot of companies come out with new products and models to drive sales. I think headphones ratings are subjective and a personal preference. I also own and like the dt770/80 and I don't agree on a lot of peoples impression of them, just like I don't agree with a lot of what I hear about the K701, to me they sound terrific with the different types of music I listen to.

what part of the headphone do you think is responsible for the 'amp issue'?

Yes it would, which is why the changes are minimal.

At the least, the K702 will open a new bucket of night-crawlers with the replaceable cable. Now, users can talk about the respective break-in times for the headphone and the cables.

Oh dear, I hope I didn't spark another civil war with that remark.

Hum, maybe you can, but there seems to be quite a few folks round here that feel as if being able to swap cables can cure all sonic ills (kind of like tube rollers if you ask me). And building in the ability to swap cables is a big deal - becasue often different cables can make a difference (not necessarily a big difference, but a difference none the less).

Personally I can live without it too as I find the K701s to match up perfectly with my tastes - that is, neutral. And I find the bass of the K701s to be spot on as well. I hate overblown bass! give me nice, tight, clean, deep bass - like that of the K701s - anyday.

Either way I'm looking forward to it, but how much is highly dependant on which shade of red they wind up debuting. One thing I liked about the headphone market is they generally stick to sensible colors... Hot Rod Red is going to look like I'm wearing something Iron Man scrapped on the drawing board.

Screw the K702. I just got my K701s today!!! (grinning

I eagerly await the new aftermarket cables that will surely follow the release of the K702.

Shouldn't they look at making a K1001 instead of a K702?
