In the time it takes to design, prototype, and develop a new product, schedule time in the factory, get the tooling made, get your raw maetrials, etc., you're looking at a very long process that most likely started way before mods started showing up for the D5000. This has been in the works for a loooong time, methinks.

If the earcups are bigger, the drivers are placed further from the ear, and maybe some dampening (which I still don't think the D5000 need) are incorporated into the new design, what kind of mod would be necessary? Modding the earpads on the D5000, while it certainly makes an improvement, detracts slightly from the extreme comfort of the stock D5000.

For $1K, it shouldn't require any modding.

We know the frame assembly is identical to that of the D2000/D5000 (not the sturdiest on the block). Even at Chinese child-slave wages, they certainly aren't lining the things with Dynamat. If they put in that little ring of cotton they use on the D2000, I wouldn't really consider that "damping". The marketing we've seen also claims an even more powerful and "dynamic" driver. For all we know, it may be even more prone to loose bass bloat and vibration.

Yeah, I'm sure we'll be one of the first to own one. Well, I hope to be able to anyway. Maybe I'll let you take the plunge first. That way if the new and improved driver stinks, I won't feel bad.

I've finally got my system sounding so good (almost sonic perfection, actually) that I could honestly be content with it forever if I had to. Plugging my Master LE power cord into the Opera made all the difference in the world. I just had to rearrange a few things to make it reach. I had that cord on my PC before.

IPodPJ, just out of curiosity, why do you have 2 headphone stands if you only have 1 headphone? and why do you have 2 ipod LODs? do you really need two just for different lengths? and when do you actually use them? jus wondering...

I bought the Woo Audio one first. It's thin rod at the top puts a crease in the headband so I dont use it anymore. And right now it's presently supporting the weight of my massive VD power cord.

I got the little ALO LOD for free from a Headfier when I first became a member on Head-Fi. It's nothing special, just a little connector LOD made with Cardas cable that's not really worth anything, but it served the purpose at the time and was very generous of the Headfier to send it to me. I just gave him money for the shipping. (And I'd pass it on to anyone else who is just starting out new into this hobby and has bought an amp and an iPod and needs an LOD.) My Qables one is now up for sale on the FS forum. I haven't had a need for portable audio for a long time now, since it doesn't even come close to the quality of a home headphone system. I've sold all my portable gear to fellow Headfiers.

I will almost certainly be getting a pair of these, and due to Markl's generosity, I will be getting a loan of his fully modded D5000's, so I will be able to compare, if not side by side (as well as to my stock D5000's).

I sold my Opera - pretty much an all tube guy now when it comes to home amps. And I am not so much into fancy power cords - I use the Iron Lung Jellyfish, nicely made power cord with Hospital-Grade plugs, $30 each.
