it's a win win situation!

I'm afraid so. The very reason why Apple was able to keep the price low is due to deals with the carriers to subsidized iPhone prices. The carriers are paying the difference as customers get into service contracts. Win-win for both Apple and the carriers as more people stampede to get their shiney new phones at these "supposedly" low prices.

I wonder how this specific plastic can withstand drops.

On a positive note, regular GPS consoles these days are kinda pricey so if the iPhone doesn't give us crippled GPS (like most phone brands), this would be a redeeming factor. Workable GPS + 3G would be great. Battery life (if they are true to their announced figures) is one of the best out there for this thin form factor. I'm 90% sure the 2gen Touch would have this battery life too.

On disappointments, they haven't learned from the first iPhone inadequacies. No mention of: MMS, cam video recording, copy-paste, flash media support, front cam for video conferencing, basic SMS functions like forwarding, proper flash media for safari browsing, etc. I hope SDK would remedy some of these software shortcomings, but don't you think Apple would have taken care of these by now?

Front cam for video conferencing would have been sweet (DICK TRACEY
WATCH).

Yes but the rate plans look descent.

Still an amazing sound...

The ipod alone is worth it!

I almost bought an apple iphone first gen a month ago, thank god someone told me the new iphone 2 will be released soon, so i got myself an ipod classic for a very great price. Brilliant little machine. Will see how is the new iphone. I bet some people will hack it, and you'll be able to get unlocked version withouth contract.

Happy to have seen the pricing schemes from GSmarena. make the price quite high before one has even turned on the phone....

And i don't blame them one bit for doing it, the only people who would have a problem with this are the people who plan on selling it rite out the door on the bay or jailbreaking it to use on another network...Ohhh well.

Yet another example of how Apple manipulates people and cuts freedom...
Good: cheaper phone
Bad: not only no cheaper rate plans, but the basic plan went up in cost.

Not that I don't think the plan pricing is bad really, just way out of line for what I need for a phone so it's a non-option. This recent action also probably signals at least two more years of AT&T only operation as I'm sure they had to have a break-even projection on their subsidization of the cost of the phone.

Here's my question or two.

Is the rate hike at AT&T of $30 PER PHONE or per CONTRACT? I have a bad feeling I know the answer.

Do you think the upgrage to 3G is all that great of a bargain/necessity to warrant an iPhone?

I'm on the fence about getting one. I was really hoping for 32gig capacity and front mounted camera. A friend who is an Applewhore said that another new version of all iPods and Macs are due out in September. Would that include updates to the iPhone?

Thanks for any advice.

Actually, the old pricing scheme was Apple's idea and they fought hard to have it that way (ie getting shot down by Verizon). They had to go with the new sales method (which is exactly the same as other smartphones- my blackberry was subsidized by verizon and I had to sign up for a 2yr contract w/ data) to be able to expand into new countries as they were having trouble picking up carriers on their own terms.

It's more an example of Apple not being able to manipulate the carriers and the carriers continuing to screw their customers.

I agree, I wish the $60 plan was still around or that you could do a voice-only plan. Unfortunately, the only smartphones that allow you to do that are WinMo phones, and I'm never touching another one of those. But the pricing makes sense as I assume 3G is more expensive than 2.5G, and the new rates are exactly the same as on Verizon (less extras with verizon though).

As far as subsidization costs, AT&T is losing $0.11/share this quarter (IIRC) because of this, but they plan to be back in the black soon (end of year or early next year, I think). They've mitigated the costs a bit by no longer giving Apple a percentage of the money from contracts.
