sorry do revive an old thread, but does that mean that there is software to install on your computer? (in order to control the volume)

There is a driver which installs automatically. Nothing to do on your part. The Proton just pops up in your audio output list. The volume is then controlled by the main volume control of your mac. No other interface at all

it's a dac commonly found in cell phones...i've forgotten the make/model...

Wolfson XWM8721 DAC chip.
