F***. e500 cable snapped

Hello!

Well, even when i babied my e500 more than you can imagine, the unavoidable happened and yesterday, the darn cable snapped where it bends over the ear, it was very hardened already.

The problem is that they are imported, and they were bought from an ebay seller (which is obviously not an authorized distributer of shure products), and i live in mexico, i already sent an email to the company that distributes shure products all across the country but i know i will have a VERY hard time getting a repair or a replacement.

So, i come to you asking a couple of things:

1. What can i say them in order to increase my chances of getting them repaired/exchanged?.

2. In case they dont feel like giving me service, is there any safe way to repair the snapped cable? i was thinking about shrink wrap cable but im still pretty unsure.

Thanks in advance!

unlucky i have the same hardened cable problem but its been this way for months of use and still is fine, i think the common mistake people make is trying to bend the cable in the opposite direction to the direction its hardened up and taken shape. i dont see why you would need to do this tho, sometimes i think shure purposefully make the cable stiffen up as to make the cable secure on the ear... a good decision but a bad decision for the careless... dont get me wrong, im not saying you are one of those.

i do think however if you email shure and ask nicely, they will surely solve your problem the cheap and chearful way, at the end of the day crap happens and shure are known for awesome support.

i wouldnt advice a self fix although there is always a way, but it would most likely get worse over time and blow your chance of an easy replacement

good luck, hope its a small problem solved easily rather than a big problem and money thrown away

I never understood the purpose of making a section of the cable retain shape when you can just put a short length of memory tubing over the wires and accomplish the same goal without weakening the cable itself.

Unlucky indeed!, i was very very careful with them all the time and i didnt realize when the cable snapped, they were hardened a few months already.

The problem is that, at least here in mexico, shure does not distribute their products directly, its another company the one that sells shure products to all the mexican stores that distribute them and that's where the problem resides, i'll have to contact that company, and not shure. Its all up to them .

Thanks for the advice, tough!

maybe they wasnt planned to retain shape as good as they do, i think the fact they hold shape so well can cause damage when people constantly remove it from its settled state.

im with you tho, although im against memory wire in the cable as from the days of the super fi 5 pro i always thought it would eventually rip out of cable. i do think there are easier ways to make the cables retain shape without risking the cable completely hard and snappable!! lets look at sony's cabling for example on the earlier ex models. simple rubbery cables were never prone to stiffening up however much contact with skin they had, although the cables suffered from disintigration over time it would seem to me a thicker stronger rubber solution like the ones on the ex series would make great cables.

I had a similar problem with my E500s and I returned filled out the form on their web site and sent them back. I think I said something along the lines that the cables broke with normal use to make sure it was apparent they were not abused.

They replaced them with set of 530s which supposedly uses a better wire, less prone to this problem.

However note that I had purchased from a authorized dealer and included a copy of the receipt, per their web site instructions.

I hear of sooo many instances of this cable snafu (and was once the victim of one myself) that I hoped there'd be one person who could provide a quality cable replacement that would last. I contacted Shure about the possibility, and they bluntly said "we have no intention of doing so." Clearly, Shure makes money on the cheap cables and unplanned obsolescence of their cables. They sound fine, but I have cheap, thin cables for my gear that are better designed than these.

I think it would be really cool if someone would provide a retrofit mod on the 500 series to use the UE plug, allowing replaceable cables.

Now that I've removed the filters, added treble boost and an amp, custom sleeves, I'm pretty happy with the 530s. The only thing that is a problem at this point is those lousy cables.

Shure replaced my original set of 500s when the cable cracked.  Now, my replacement 530s have an intermittent problem in the right cable.  I'm sending them off to UM next week for a remold so I can have a decent set of cables.

Sorry Shure, I know you may not care, but no more business from me and now I'll go out of my way to make sure people know avoid these IEMs,
