Wow, this is the first time I could actually tell a noticeable difference between sources, I can only compare the 2nd gen nano and Zune, but man there is an amazing synergy between these two. No contest, the Sony MD player sounds much better then my Zune 30 or 2nd gen nano. The Grado SR-60s sound so much fuller, the first obvious thing was the bass I was like man since when did Grado's have so much bass, and I flip the player over and it says Digital Megabass, it just makes the Grado rock even more, since one of Grado's weaknesses are bass, but this player makes the drums come alive. I almost want to say this is a night and day difference the Grado's sound has more weight, clarity, and bass, its unbelievable. If anyone has an MD Player+Grado or just an MD player let me know if you agree my observations. Man, I think this is my first real eargasm.

When I listened to the sound for the 1st time, I was hit by it. I was punched by the not-punchy-bass. I was hoping it would offer much better bass response than SE315.. equals to Klipsch Image...

I use my MZ-NH1 with music recorded in linear-pcm. Sounds better than FLAC out of my Meizu M6. Could be higher quality amp, sound chip and filters on the hi-md. (And hell the hi-MD unit costs a lot more than any mp3 player too back then)

Hmm... I always heard that MD players did have great sound quality. Was always hesitant to try it out, but maybe I'll pick one up in the near future.
One question though (too lazy to look it up) how much high quality music can you hold on one MD/Hi-MD?

you can fit about 90 minutes of music, completely uncompressed (PCM) on a 1GB Hi-MD disc.

Hmm... that doesn't seem like much. Does it have to be uncompressed or is there a codec that the MD players will play?

Another great thing I'm noticing is that the sound is less fatiguing making the sound much smoother.

Indeed, the Grado SR-80's with my MZ-RH1 or NH900 etc make a very pleasing noise. Not only rock, but for classical, folk and so on.

Most of the MD models mentioned here (NH1, NH900, RH1) have the "HD digital amp". I don't own any Grados but my ES7s are driven by a Sony MZ-EH1 Hi-MD player-only unit. Love it.
RH1 are said to have improved SQ or at least with MP3 playback.

Atrac3+ was the latest/last iteration of Sony's proprietary sound compression scheme. HiSP is 256kbps and yields approximately 7 1/2 hours on a Gig disc, and about 140 min on an MD80. Atrac3+ 352kbps (which I call A352) is the highest quality 'speed' of compression available and it can yield about 5 1/2 hours per Gig disc, and about 105 min on an MD80. The times are approximate as A3+ is a VBR and Sony says it can compress 30%-80% depending on music/sound complexity. Both sound about like their AAC counterparts, but take about half the space (a 3 min. A352 file is about 3Mb, the AAC350 counterpart is a little over 6Mb). In my A829, AAC-VBR350 sounds pretty close to A352 on HiMD. It just needs more capacity:-) Cheers.

I have a HiMD that doesn't have the HD digital amp and I think my MP3 players, 1Gen Shuffle, Sony A818 sound better to be honest. Lots of people rave about the HD digital amp, but it wasn't designed to improve SQ just improve battery life.

Yes ~ absolutely. All those expensive digi-players are really inferior marketing chips. The nice thing about coming to a Hi-Md player when it's so uncool to use, is that the quality is all there - at less cost. Any portable amp will boost the mini-disc into the audiophile domain ~ I love the TTVJ portable Milletts synergy with the RH1 minidisc player!
