Audio Terms Additions

Thread Starter
If there are any terms, acronyms, or other such things you would like to suggest to be added to the FAQ I am building for audio terms to help out for everyone here at the site, please submit them here. If you didn't know something when you first started into this headphone sickness, and want to help someone else out by having it added, please do so. I have already added a number of things to the original Stereophile list, modified some words greatly, and tried to clear up and confusion or ambiguity.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Here's the current listing in WordPerfect format:

Just go here and right click and download the file to see what's already there, and then suggest away.

Thanks guys.

Done. It is in a gerneric windows text format now also. Just right click on the .txt file to download.

Sorry, I don't have a full-blown Adobe Acrobat, so I can't created .pdf files.

I just read through it. Great job, btw. Lots of tone descriptions I've never heard before. A few suggestions:

Words to add:
--artifact (ie, noticible pops or crackles in lossy music encoding)
--audiophile (might I suggest: An addict to high fidelity. Deemed deluded by his family, aloof by his friends, and abusive by his wallet.)
--circumaural, supra-aural
--equalizer, eq
--ground loop (cross-reference to "hum")
--impedence (and, maybe, a note that higher impedence headphones are more likely to benefit from a headphone amplifier. Same note on "sensitivity"?)

Definitions to modify:
--closed, open. Not only is there a difference between "closed" and "open" headphones, but also between "closed-back" and "open-back"
--frequency. Consider a chart showing different frequency ranges (on a log scale) and the relevant description(s) for each range
--low bass, deep bass. Any difference between the two?
--neutral, transparent. Add something like, "The audiophile's impossible quest."

One more thing. Check the cross-references. I saw several notes referring to "critical distance" but the term isn't defined. If you need help, I'd help you edit the list if you could give me a Word file.

"Artifact" is a good one but it has a broader definition. It is any random additive sounds caused by digital processing (i.e., not just pops and crackles, but metalic swirlies and things, and they can get added by noise supression, and other manipulations besides lossy encoding).

Thanks for the kind words redshifter, stereth, and Wallijohn. I appreciate it a lot.

zowie - LOL. Not a bad idea actually. Or maybe I should just scramble the definitions up so that they are REALLY confused when they try to look something up.

Stereth & Zowie - ju st copied your definitions and additions into the file and will get to work incorporating them. Great job on the additions and catch on the use of a word but lack of definition stereth!

audiophile - listed as a sickness for which there truly is no cure in the national psychology manual. Symptoms usually include: lack of money, large periods of time spent alone with only music as their company, a compulsion to spend large periods of their free and work time posting useless and pointless posts on web sites like Head-Fi, DIYAudio, or HeadWize, and is usually accompanied by a severe case of upgraditis. They are deemed as being deluded by their family members (especially their spouse), aloof by their friends, and abusive by their wallet. The funny thing is that they normally find a close kindred with audio saleman and other sufferers of this sickness.

artifact - any random additive sounds caused by digital processing. This can come from a lossy compression, scratches, dirt, or some other form of disruption of the laser pick-up’s ability to read the digital data correctly, an out of round disc, or can be due to vibration.

circumaural - a headphone design in which the ear pads totally surround the ears and instead of resting directly upon the ears, they rests on the parts of the head surrounding the ear.

supra-aural - a headphone design in which the ear pads rest directly upon the ears instead of resting upon the parts of the head surrounding the ears.

The definition of critical distance can be found under the definition for direct sound.
