HDTV Connection Help Needed

Thread Starter
I just purchased my first HD LCD TV, the Samsung LN32A450, which is one of the top-rated 32" TV's around these days. With the TV purchase, I also bought, at 50% off, an upconverting DVD player. The connection between the DVD player and HDTV will be an HDMI cable.

Here's my issue/problem: I have a 3 year-old Sony STR-DE995 receiver with a Polk , which is fantastic but does not have HDMI inputs/outputs, only component for any HD signal. I can't afford a new receiver right now so what are my options for getting the best HD signal into my receiver and Polk Audio 6.1 surround sound? Maybe going Digital Optical Audio out of my DVD player and cable/satellite box to the receiver, then HDMI out of those devices to my TV for the best picture? Thanks!

yeah that sounds like your best option, run the hdmi cables directly into the tv and then the optical outs into your reciever

Digital/Optical Out from the cable box and DVD player, whatever the best outputs ya got. As for the TV, HDMI will carry the audio but you should be able to (I've got a 46" Samsung myself) turn off the audio output to the TV speakers in the TV menu.

Beyond that, make sure the cable box's audio output is set to it's highest and that the video output is set to the highest your TV will accept. My Motorola PVR box required accessing a mainenance menu in order to turn on 1080p/16:9.

A good place to browse is the AVS Forum , specifically the LCD section. They have posts outlining how to optimize the TV and what it 'should' look like.
