I just got these:
Etymotic ER4 MicroPro Earphones. - eBay (item 140235050324 end time May-28-08 20:34:07 PDT)

How'd I do? It doesn't mention as to which it is, but I figured retail on either are like $180-$300.....so how'd I do? And which ones do I have?

You did pretty well; I got my pair, a "damaged box" new version with black strain relief and crappier cable, for $121 plus shipping from Amazon.

I don't know about the old version but the new version has the model number engraved into the barrel break.

Otherwise I suppose you will figure it out when you get them and plug them up to a DAP and if only quiet sound comes out then I guess you have ER-4S. =P

Does it look like a newer or older version? I kinda bought it on impulse seeing as how many people rec'd it for use on public transportation since it isolates well.

I wish the item description were a bit better, it just says it retailed for $300, lol.

It's the older version, the newer one is all black. Best thing to do is to ask the seller :P

Awaiting a reply from the seller.

Any sonic differences between the older and new???

Good job. From what I heard it seems like the er4s sounds better than the er4p but needs an amp. (you definitely got the er4s, red and blue. the er4p is all black)

I don't believe either of those things are true. Many people say the ER-4P sounds better as it has a little more bass, which is worth more than the slight increase in clarity you get with the S.

Also, the colours are indicative of the age of manufacture, I believe. All older ones had coloured connectors, all new ones are black.

ER-4P + cable = ER-4S

The ER-4P version is more versatile - you can use it unamped with your portable DAP and.....If you did in fact get the ER-4P version, all you need is a cable that essentially turns it into an ER-4S (resistors in the cable bring it up to the higher impedance of the S version)

Here's the link to the converter cable

no not that I know of... The ER4 line was introduced in 1991, and I don't think much has changed from then.

Ahh...well, that's good that's no sonic differences between the newer and older models.

I knew about the differences between the two models, I just wasn't sure if aesthetically there was a way to see what I was buying.

In any case, these will be used out of an amp with bass knobs (Diablo and/or GoVibe Magnum), so the difference between the two bass wise wasn't a concern, but it was something I was curious about knowing which version I was buying....
