as stated I am desired to know how's IMOD sq.

I got a normal 5 g that sounds just fine. Refuse to use it after getting B&O beo 6. Is IMOD's sq improved dramatically? Someone can tell me?
It's definately a significant increase in sq.

Do Mod IPVs 4-5.5g sound better than Mod IPCs?

I don't know what Mod IPC means.

I'm guessing ipod classic? But Red Wine Audio doesn't mod those...
IIRC imod 4g > imod 5g > Classic >= Video

Red Wine don't mod the Classic, as the signal path is relatively clean already.

And my understanding is that the Classic has an inferior DAC to the 4, 5 and 5.5g so that the mod isn't really worth it anyway.

I am shortly about to receive my iModded iPod, so I will report back!

Over the last month I have acquired (in order) a set of Sure SE530's, an RSA Predator and a Jumbo Cryo Silver X LOD.

The iMod will be the final component and then my plans for world domination will be complete - mwahahaha etc.

In all seriousness, it has been great having my portable system improving week on week with the arrival of new components and the iMod will (should!) be the final layer of icing on an already delicious audio-cake.

There is some evidence according to another poster/thread that it is a cirrus chip in the classic and is a worse chip than the wolfson found in earlier gens, at any rate, there is also a thread where vinny directly compared measurements between the 5.5 imod and classic and imod comes out on top, although the classics line out is pretty good, it can't compare to the imod vcap combo.

Mr Benevolent, add a vcap dock to that lot, portable or otherwise and you will have one of the finest sounding portable rigs money can buy, and actually, a very good basis for a relatively cheap home system too.

Wow, what an expensive rig, MrBenvolent. How much did it cost ya?

Now you see:

I was actually looking at the docks (with charger) on ALO to use whilst making friends with the armchair at home and I got a little confused.....

I presume I would need to buy another LO cable to run from the dock to my Predator if I wanted to use one???

Or am I talking rubbish here?

in any case, I think the wallet has taken enough of a pounding for a while.

Well I was fortunate enough to receive the SE530's from the wonderful MrsBenevolent as an early birthday gift, which took a bit of the financial sting out of things!

That said, I still paid for the Predator, the LOD and a new iMod iPod (MrsBenevolent gets my existing std 80Gb 5.5g as a thank you!) which I guess came to around $1100 or so with postage...

Have been re-ripping a lot of my older CDs to Apple lossless as well - might as well take full advantage of the system eh. That said, the stuff I already have at 320 I will leave alone for now.

To add: this was partly my justification too!

I have been hankering for another separates system for a while, having sold my last one just before I emigrated to the Middle East 2 years ago.

Now, what I am looking at is likely to cost me around $5000 or so which I can't really justify....at the moment. Besides the flat is a little too small to inflict that kind of a system on MrsBenevolent every night!

I came to the conclusion that a 5th or so of that price spent on a "portable" rig which could take advantage of my current digital music library as well would be an acceptable compromise and, like you say, could even form the basis for a home system later down the line.

yes you would need a different lod, the ones you would use (presuming you are using a 5.5 gen imod) without the vcap dock would be an imod lod which contain the blackgate caps which are found inside the 4gen imod's as they had more space to fit them inside by vinni from red wine audio so would not benefit from an external cap solution. The lod you would use if using a vcap dock would be a normal ipod lod, just any old ipod lod which did not contain any caps inside the connector, unless the lod specified itself as an imod lod, then it would be fine for use with the vcap dock

Absolutely, and after reading many threads about the different sound qualities between cd players and portables (notably the imod) the point of diminishing returns, bit perfect digital transports, iwadia ipod dock, and of course the pred dac well yes, basically, as I have very recently myself come to realise, certain portable solutions can be implemented very well in a home setup.

for clarity as I tend to waffle incoherently without actually being to the point:

to use your imod without vcap dock you would use this or some other imod specific interconnect (I think this is the one you have)

Audio Line Out

to use the imod WITH a vcap dock, you would have to buy somethign like this:

Audio Line Out

Cheers fella.

Yeah, I already have my Jumob Cryo X Silver iMod LOD which I am currently using on my unmodded pod.

I was thinking that I would eventually look at one of these to complete the system for armchair use.
