How would I know? I don't work at Grado Labs. I'm not privy to these things. Why don't you ask John Grado?

I think there are two drivers, one with standard copper voice coil/diaphragm and one with UHPLC copper voice coil/destressed diaphragm. The latter is tweaked on the higher end models.

Anyway, who gives a s--t? Just enjoy the model you can afford.

Idle speculation? It's called "research". The info I provided is out there. RS-2 driver being the same as the top end of the Prestige line is an assumption based on there being no information that indicates that it has been de-stressed twice as per the RS-1.

Assumptions based on reading advertising instead of testing or discussions with designers would fall under the term "idle speculation".

But seriously, how productive is it to analyze this? I can hear notable differences in their models... unless you were planning on buying SR 60's and re casing them (which I've hear a few and they didn't always improve) it's really all a moot point. Even if it was 1 driver across a dozen types of headphones, we can all agree that it's a pretty damn good driver.

If it was 1 driver (which it probably isn't because of the UHLC coil), you could buy the cheapest one and give it a new wooden housing, saves alot of $$$

I spent some time looking at the Headroom charts and graphs of freq response across the grado line. Read a couple of interviews, and looked closely at the marketing info.

I think there is one driver design, matched more closely for higher priced phones, using more expensive parts, and modified in the case of the GS1000 to match the different enclosure.

Other than slight modifications for enclosures, higher quality parts, and parts closer to spec for higher end phones, there is one driver, and one Grado house sound.

From the Headroom site, comparing freq response curves... the bass responses are more or less identical across the grado line, until you get to the GS1000... I checked this with the Koss line of open phones that use the titanium coated koss driver, and I see the same thing... relatively identical response curves across the bass line, and differences in treble.

Same with the Senn 580-650 line... though I don't know Sennheisers line at all. I'm guessing they are all the same driver though, judging from freq response (and if they aren't, that pretty much shoots down my line of reasoning.)

Interesting that the treble would differ so much... and so suddenly on all those phones. Think its because of design, or because of the directional nature and higher energies of the higher frequencies?

BTW, check out the freq response between the 325 and the 60

They aren't. A Senn rep said in one of these threads that the 650 uses a different driver than the 580/600.

Same but tweaked? Do you understand the meaning of the word "same"? Two drivers, one tweaked, one untweaked, are different drivers.

on a seperate note, I am realy curious what differences there are between the hp1000 drivers and john grado's drivers. I bet all of them have a lot of similarities.

My house and the Empire state building share the same basic construction. Clearly they are too similar to be called different.
