Swan M10 Woofer

I've been thinking about replacing my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 with the Swan M10 since the amp is starting to get problems and I'm getting a lot of crackling. I checked the cost for repairing it and it came out to be about $70 with shipping so I decided that I might as well get some new speakers. I read that the woofer for the M10 should be placed on top of the desk in order to get the best sound. However, I don't have enough room for that so I'd have to put it underneath my desk or on the floor. I'm just wondering if it's still worth buying if the woofer isn't going to be placed on my desk. If not, do you have any recommendations for new 2.1 speakers for about $100?

Thanks

i purchased the Swan m10 a few months ago and also did not have room for the woofer on my desk, so i keep it underneath. I have no problem with it whatsoever. These speakers will be fine for your situation.

One thing i do suggest is that you maybe prop up the woofer if it is going to be on the ground, as it has no grill or cover for the woofer. It would be terrible if you or most likely someone else was to accidentally kick it and cause damage. I have a small wooden box that boots it about 5 inches off the ground, just enough to keep it away from feet.

another point, is that the volume control is on the woofer, so it is going to be a bit annoying to crawl under your desk to adjust. I use an inline volume control that i got off an old pair of computer speakers and it works great

i absolutely love these speakers, good luck!

You could also consider some entry level active monitors. M-Audio have a couple that start at around $100, though I'd recommend the AV 40 @ $150 shipped from Sweet Water.

If you want a sub you can add one at a latter date and feed it a high-level signal from the right channel (you would only crossing over one channel but I doubt you would notice). Better monitors have dedicated sub pre-outs which might be worth considering if you can afford it. Like headphones good speakers are an investment.

Thanks for your help guys. I've decided to order an M10 and hopefully it'll work out fine. If it really is that bad, I guess I could just return it. It would only be a small loss.
