If you would like to retain the sweet Stello DAC sound while upgrading to a preamplifier, I would suggest that you simply go for the best and look for a used Stello DP200 which is basically the highly acclaimed DA220 DAC mated with a highly rated preamp (dual-mono, fully balanced, class A, all discrete circuit --> no opamp, multi input/output, high quality headphone amp, etc......). Just a suggestion as a very very happy owner.

Thanks for the recommendation, but that's a bit over my budget. I've gotta sell this DAC first,
