REVIEW: Four 6AS7G-based home tube headphone amps reviewed and compared - Page 4

Skylab, you really need to try a few additional things with your Extreme.

First, have you tried a Tung Sol 2c51 (or even better, the LM Ericsson 2c51) for the driver? Much better than any 6SN7's I've tried.

Second, you should try the Tung-Sol 5998 with that 2c51. (Although the GE 5998A is a cheap alternative to see if you like the sound -- if you do, then the Tung-Sol is much better, although more expensive).

Third, you really ought to sell some of your less used stuff and get the Ultrasone Edition 9. My Darth Beyer and D5000 don't even compare to the Ed. 9's.

And one thing that helped with some noise I had was a good power conditioner.

(I just noticed you have B&W Nautilus 800 Signatures! I assume you listen to headphones only when you have to!)

Hmmmm...where to begin...

1. Thanks for your note.

2. Tried the 2C51 adapter, with Tung Sol, Sylvania, And WE 396A, wasn't that impressed, sold the adapter. The Mullard ECC32 is far batter sounding, IMO.

3. Used Tung-Sol 5998's in the SP Extreme for a long time until I got the GEC 6AS7G's, which I prefer in the Extreme. Now using the TS 5998's in the DV 337, and that is the right tube-amp match for both tubes, IMO.

4. Heard the Edition 9's, thought they were good, but nowhere near as good as the JVC DX1000, which are my main headphone for daytime listening (I prefer the deep-cup Darth Beyers at night for a more mellow listen).

5. I have API (Audio Power Industries) power conditioners on every piece of audio gear I own.

6. Yes, the N800's make the best sound in my house, but with a wife and kids, the headphones do get a lot of time
