Amen. The sequence of events here so far is that 3 separate communities have considered the idea of hosting in 2009. grawk proposed DC/Maryland but then deferred to JP11801 and the team he assembled in LA. A few people from Chicago offered that they might be willing to do it -- and might want to contend with LA for 2009 -- but then they too decided they were not quite ready and deferred to JP and the LA crew.
The mere fact that some local or nearby members want to
attend a meet in an area doesn't mean much of anything unless there is also a core team ready and willing to do all the work necessary. As of now, the only committed team is in LA and I believe that they already up and running. If you want to be part of the national/international meet, then get yourself to it, wherever it is. It is worth it. If you want to go to meets only in your area, then do that and hope the national/international meet comes within your range. Otherwise, put together a serious team of committed and reliable people, demonstrate that the location has enough membership to be the core attendees, and then put yourselves "in the running," so to speak.
