I personally think it has something to do with the burn in. I made my friend a burn-in playlist, and he left the headphones plugged in and went out of town for a week (a total of 240+ hours). He came back and was surprised at the amount of bass the phone pushes.

Basically the playlist looks like this:
Pink noise - 5 minutes
Sine Sweep - 10 seconds
10Hz - 1 minute
Sine Sweep - 10 seconds
20Hz - 1 minute
... (increments of 10Hz and Sine Sweep in between)
150Hz -1 minute
Sine Sweep - 10 seconds
Drums - 2 minutes
Repeat with duplicated files at different % in volume adjustment setting in iTunes

You get the point.
Your Canadian weeks are longer than our weeks here, I didn't know that!

Meh, a week, ten days, all the same. It was over the spring break.

I recently purchased a pair of MS1's from a contributing member of this thread and am really interested in the conversion.
Seeing as I have no tools I was trying to find someone who could possible make the distancers for me.
I put up a WTB in the misc. section but got no nibbles.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
NICK

If you are in North America, RDS can help you, if you are in the EU, I am propably in charge. If you are from elsewhere (Aussie? Want a beer? ), you can choose dependent from price and exchange rate.

I will be tooling up in the near future to make a small batch run for the US and Canada H-F'ers. I need to make a few other woodies first and get my lathe set up again first. Not sure how long it will be, but when they're done, I'll post up a pic or two. Pricing will be determined after I make them, but I'm much more open to trades than cash.

is there an agreed upon answer as to whether to ms1 or ms1is are more suitable for modding?

We were scared that the mod didn't work anymore with the MS1i due to its new "bulge design", but that seems to be pointless.

You can modify both versions. I'd choose the older MS1 as it's cheaper. I have my doubts in respect of reputed massive sound improvements of the newer version.

Completely wrong thread, so hence the edit. While I'm in here, I might as well post.

I'm very interested in doing a complete woody mod while I'm at making the adaptors, but I need to find a set of 40 (suppose a spade bit would work for the central hole., 46-48mm, and 54-58mm hole saws to do the job. Those are the sizes I can figure out from this thread. I'll then need to make the driver surround. Got no illusions that it'll be one piece, but should still look quite good.

I'll let you guys know how the whole [I]busting-my-new-ms1's-and-covering-them-in-wood/[I] endevour goes.

Ok, since I posted this in the wrong thread, but xkrowx replied, here's the original question.

I've just got a pink noise soundtrack at a standard volume to burn mine in, and do it every night (leave the headphones/amp playing for 8ish hours while I sleep). I wonder how much (if any) difference sine wave sweeps, bass frequencies etc make in a burn in.
I burned in my pair of MS-1 with just pink noise, and my friend's with the the playlist mentioned earlier. His MS-1 is noticeably bassier (a lot of punch, or thump) without any compensation in the treble. As stated in wikipedia:

"signals in the 2–4-kHz octave sound loudest, and the loudness of other frequencies drops increasingly, depending both on the distance from the peak-sensitivity area and on the level"

So my logic tells me that pink noise improves mid-range frequencies, and playing low frequency will help to break in the diaphragm more efficiently compared to pink noise. Similarly, sine sweeps work the same, since it plays every frequency from 20Hz to 20kHz at the same noise level, improving bass, mid-range and treble significantly.

Now that I've got a pair of OK2 (surprisingly they sound just as good), I've decided to send my MS-1 back to Grado for a repair (right channel rattling), and request to have both drivers replaced. When they ship them back, I'm going to burn them in using the latter method, because I love bass.

Cool, so I might as well throw in some sine wave sweeps and low frequency stuff when I burn in.

A set of those cheap saw things costs 5ish Euros over here. I can get them and send them over, but I fear you end up with a satirical higher Dollar amount (suboptimal exchange rate, shippings costs, paypal fees, tax).

Yeah, the annoyance of the internets. Thanks for the offer Nickchen I can head to my local huge green hardware store and pick some up, but I didn't want to get the really nasty quality ones because of the cut quality they have (I used to work there). So I'm stuck with $20-35aud for a decent hole saw. Times that by three. However.....

I can probably borrow a few of my step-dad. He'd have some somewhere around his shed. I dunno what sizes he has, but he's a bit of a handyman. So it should be cool. even if I can get a 40, 50 and 60mm holesaw, and a file/router I'll be good.

A good hole saw here in Canada cost $20.

The ones available here are mostly crap quality as well. You got to take care that they don't overheat, but also then, I exchange them regulary. Really a pity, I also prefer expensive HQ tools and longterms usage over that use&throw away that has become hip in the 90s.
Most of the times it depends on the brand. I have a hole saw that was what, 15€? I also have a hole saw of comparable quality that I found for 6€. Problem is that not all stores carry the cheaper ones. Real pity. Anyway, I hate working with those 'flexible' hole saws. Hate hate hate.

I use this:
