Alessandro MS1000 and MS Ultimate - DIY & modding [56K warning] - Page 36

Maybe. The SR225 have compared to MS1 just a bit less treble and a bit more bass. Ok, it's technical better, but not that much.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Grado GS1000

Hey Nickchen,

Can you elaborate as to a possible explanation as to why soundstage doesn't increase as much on a MS-2i compared to the other two? And would a felt pad covering the driver tone down the harshness?

I really want to purchase a pair of MS-2i, for aesthetic reasons mostly, but I like how drivers (assuming they are the same with MS-1) are matched to tighter tolerances.

I have no idea. Maybe the "data" containing acoustical 3d information is in some frequency range that gets suppressed by the MS2's shrillness?

Not that much shrillness.

Nowhere, Darkaudio is down. You are left with distancers as described in this thread, that is idealwise DIY, or you get them built by RDS (see post #1) or by me, depends from your location.

I'm sorry who will make some in US?

After a lot extensive listening to Tool, A Tribe Called Quest, etc I have started to notice more and more that possibly the bass isn't up to par as it should be. Like with the drums during "10,000 Days Pt.2", it sounds like a background soft drumming instead of the powerful sound it should. Anything I could/should do to help this?

Assuming your distancers follow Nickchen's the next step is to make sure you have a good seal between the phones and distancers. Personally I used a thin line of glue to ensure a perfect seal.
I'm very happy with the bass on mine.

Does anyone know of an international source for the distancers? MS1 is on the way, and I'd like to try this mod.

Did you use three or four holes in the distancer? Also, the type of felt you use in distancer will make a difference to the bass response. I'd try to find a nice 1/8" thick cashmere blend felt at a fabric store. Ask to buy the minimum amount possible as you won't need much.

I know some people find it annoying, but the hot melt glue is nice because it isn't permanent. It can be remelted with an adjustable temp heat gun with a small concentrator to keep the heat at the junction and off the driver. Low melting temp glue is available too if your really worried about sacrificing the driver if they ever need to be removed. 3M makes another glue that bonds until it is heated, then it will fail and the 2 pieces can be separated. I can't remember the trade name though.

As the others stated, maybe you don't have correct sealing or too "enthusiastic" drill holes in the distancers.

But maybe everthing is perfect and your test pieces have a severe "Grado" kickbass as only bass share. The mod reduces the stock kickbass approx. 10-15%, but you get that extra deep bass layer in exchange. When the music does not have that data, things may sound thin, but that must be extremely suboptimal recordings.

I don't know what it is...I feel like someone sneaked into my room while I was gone and stole the sound from my headphones. They sounded awesome a few days ago but now the bass and "body" of the sound is pretty much gone and they just sound like normal head phones...

Maybe the seal messed up. I have double sided mounting tape and then tightly taped electrical tape around that. I also have three 1,5mm holes in the distancers. I made sure to not try to be too enthusiastic because I knew I could always drill more but couldn't "un-drill". I'll try harder to find some Blu-Tak and re-do my seal with the tape for the time being until then...thank you.

Maybe a driver is partially blocked. That can happen when they have fallen down or (under very awkward circumstances) dust has come into the neodym magnet/coil-section.

The latter has, BTW, propably happened to my MS Pro. I had the systems openly lying around when I was doing final steel wool jobs on the woody, I'm such an idiot. They sometimes get into one-sided "bassless mode", and I have to shake and beat them hard to return to normal mode. I'm very curious if I will be able to convince Gradessandro to sell me exchange systems, and if yes, I wonder if I can afford them.

Worst case, they'll be US$100 for repair, plus the return postage.
