Smyth SVS Realiser Virtual Surround Technology for Headphones - Page 13

I put my name on the list, I guess they have already sold the units in stock.

Wow... This is the first headphone product over $600 that I am even considering buying. I makes the receiver I use, and the ones I've been looking to "upgrade" to look like a JOKE.

So, just to clarify, the $3,000 price tag includes the receiver, the calibration mics, and the Stax headphones? How well does calibration work with other headphones?

Seat shaker... I think I may have to install one for my current setup, that might tide me over until I get one of these.

In the WSR article, Stephen Smyth states: "You can take a set of electrostatic headphones followed by a good set of dynamic headphones, and to be honest with you, when you are finished with our measurement, they pretty much sound the same. It is surprising how well headphones, which may only cost $50 to $100, work with our system. They work very well."

For that reason i wish they would give the option to just buy the unit without the headphones - if you already own a better stax setup, or a really good dynamic.

They might offer that option to some people, not sure.
They told me that it is their policy not to offer that option.

You may be right, time will tell.
OK. Maybe I should ask them about that again.

I wonder how long will it take to create s similar technology by software (like foobar dsp or winamp VST). With 8 core CPUs approaching, sooner or later it should be possible.

There are key hardware components that complete the package. So, pure software will never work 100%.

What do these key hardware components do that cannot be done by software?

measure the sound field from the room/&loudspeakers at Your ears, measure your head position in real time

for just the dsp part current PC processors are likely already fast enough - but burdened with the Windoz OS they aren't so dependable for realtime feedback/interaction

I'm definitely going to get an SVS Realiser.

Talking with Mike, Steve, and Steve at CanJam, we should definitely organize a mini meet at Smyth Research in Camarillo. I think we should definitely get a list of seriously interested buyers. We could then have personalizations done there along with profiling our own headphones. (I don't plan on using the Headphone profiling file).

An AIX trip would be great as well. I'm definitely interested. dsperber posted great info in this thread:

Smyth Research said they could handle a group of about 10-12 people on a weekend, like a Saturday. We could do it sometime this summer, or perhaps as late as early fall.

So, who's interested? <raises hand>

I'll post a thread in the Meets forum if there is enough interest.

I finally got notice that my SVS Realiser is ready for me to pick up.

I'll be posting pics and impressions later on after I pick it up.

The next challenge is getting a Tactile Transducer set up. The ones they used at both the CanJams are made by Crowson Tech.

Crowson Technology - TES-100 Stereo

It's basically the "subwoofer" for the SVS Realiser.
