Favorite Miles Davis CD?

Thread Starter
Miles evolved so much during his career that it's hard to find many people who enjoyed all of it, from the early 50's to his death in the 90's. Does anyone have a favorite?

Mine has to be Milestones. I still remember hearing that record when I was a kid playing sax in the school band and being totally blown away by Cannonball and Coltrane. Love that record!

IF I could have named my son by myself, I would have named him "Desmond Miles Brubeck" and my last name ain't Brubeck!

For any soon-to-be-fathers out there, that's a very cool name. And it's probably not taken. Well? Well?!!

It's the cliche answer, but for me it's "Kind of Blue"

I was born in 1963 and my dad gave me his records when I was 10 or twelve years old. He had a bunch of jazz records from the fifties and sixties and "Kind of Blue" was the one that grabbed me first. I still remember sitting in my room listening to it over and over. I never got tired of it and I'm still not.

It changes all the time, but I don't know that it's ever truly been Kind Of Blue—even though I do really love it and it's probably the disc that I (and everybody else) recommend most. In A Silent Way has definitely been tops on several occasions, as have Nefertiti, Porgy and Bess, Sketches Of Spain and Jack Johnson.

The Miles record that always mesmerizes me, however, the one I've somehow managed to keep hearing new things in after about 25 years of listening, has to be Filles de Kilimanjaro. It has something to do with the play between electric and acoustic instruments against subtle, soul-type grooves; it's like Miles was clearly in transition—trying to figure out how to go electric—but somehow the musicians (two bands, actually) got the absolute most they could out of that fleeting moment in time. To me, nothing else in the catalog quite resembles it.

Mine rotates. Hardly a poor record in the catalogue, of course.

Mine is actually Asenseur pour l'Echafaud. What a beautiful album, concept, film ....

I never get tired of Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965, E.S.P., Someday My Prince Will Come, or Kind of Blue.

Right now I have Kind of Blue and Milestones. Kind of Blue is more accessible, but I like the depth of Milestones as I listen to it again and again.

Sketches of Spain
Not for the sound quality though.

It depends on my mood - but generally, Kind of Blue, Someday My Prince Will Come, and Jack Johnson

Porgy and Bess. Sublime...

well i only have two of them (kind of blue and bitches brew... hehehe it rhymes), and only listned to them for a few hours, but right now it is bitches brew. though his may be because i come from a rock background, and from i have read, that album is traditionally regarded as to be similar to that styling. or is this just a placeabo affect, because i am supposed to like it more because i am from that background? meh, who cares, they are both awsome.
