Best Closed Can under $800

Thread Starter
this includes the Darth Beyers. as you may kno i am wondering if i should sell my DT770s because they pale in comparison to my hd600 and i want a better closed headphone.

i have been looking at the D5000. but is it better than the darth beyers? also is there a closed can out there better than these two? audio technica maybe. any suggestions would be helpful.

why do they have to be closed? I hope you're not planning to use D5000s outside...

I think VC/Victor DX1000's price went up, but according to many, they are amazing in terms of bass. I suggest that you read upon them first.

Why not get better amps/sources to improve your HD600s?
HD600s are absolutely amazing headphones, but they are picky about amping.

For just a shade over $800 the ATH-W5000 is the obvious answer, if and only IF you have no fit issues.

From my perspective, every criticism levelled at them is negated by a good fit, and mine must be perfect, pressing them into my head doesn't increase the bass, and believe me I wouldn't want any more. No hollowness, plenty of bass, amazing extension, texture, detail, positioning, mids, you get the picture. I'm not saying I wouldn't like an L3000 or R10, but price and availability somewhat rules them out. Having said that, your preference for headphones with rather overstated bass means they're probably not what you're looking for either, but best currently available closed or open dynamic cans ? In my opinion, yes.

You should be able to find ATH-W10VTGs for under $800. They're by far my favorite closed can shy of the L3000s.

I'm curious as to what area they improve on over the W5000 ?

W5000 for my pick. They didn't fit me at all my head's too small but i bent the metal bars to get the pads square with my ears and they sound very, very good. Actually better than good. Perhaps not for bass heads though. Curios to hear about W10VTG's also though.

musicality, tone, prat, pretty much every category is better on the vtgs than the w5000s, imho.

I disagree, but the W10 have certainly a more "european" tone (less mids colorations) than the other AT woodys.

If you look at it from a mere technical view (details, resolution, soundscape), the W5000 is totally superior to the W10 IMO.

I experienced that most folks prefered the W10 in situations when both could be tested briefly, but I am dead sure that most would keep the W5000 if they had enough time to get used to it.

I didn't experience the W10s briefly. The W5000s just aren't my thing.

Isn't it better to improve your source/amp with some of the money? btw, the w5000's are ~$700 in some places (e.g. amazon)

I'd say finding the right headphones for you matters more than anything else. Then amp and source.

The nice thing about the audio technicas is they often sound much better out of lower end gear than other headphones.

the VTGs are the best ipod phones I've ever heard.

Musicality & tone are about the least tangible & most subjective attributes one could wish to define, prat, I'd be surprised if the vtgs are better from a technical standpoint, but I've never heard them.

What I look for in headphones: sounds like music

The VTGs (and JPNs) are the only sub $1500 closed headphones I've heard that meet this qualification. With my ears. With my music. etc.

The W5000s are from the "other" sound family from Audio Technica. Not my thing.

Musicality is totally meaningless. Tone is absolutely subjective and, in the end, what really matters to most people. What's prat? And vtgs?

agreed.

prat: pace, rhythm & timing, another somewhat intangible quality but perhaps easier to perceive & quantify. slow?fast? loose?tight? that's how I hear it anyway.

vtg: another AT limited edition woody.
